Continuing Committee Seeks Writers

by Darren Lacoste, Editor in Chief

6th August 2010

The Continuing Committee is currently seeking to add writers to its First and Second Edition writing teams. Interested parties should read all material that appears below:

What does the job entail?

Writing for The Continuing Committee requires submission of articles when called upon to do so, usually with "short notice." Inherent to the job requirements is an author's ability to consistently come up with new and innovative article topics, as well as to communicate those notions effectively in a coherent, flowing, well-written, standardized way. Most of these articles are "deck list with strategy" pieces, however, many take other forms such as tournament reports, card-spoiling "blurbs" and so on. Members are required to register at our website, and regularly read posts on the message board created for the team.

What's in it for me?

First, members will experience a sense of pride in being part of an organized team of volunteers whose mission is to maintain a community of players that are excited about Decipher's Star Trek Customizable Card Game. Second, writing team members will gain notoriety within the playing community, leading not only to the respect and admiration of their peers, but to the potential of providing greater influence on the community as a whole. This can take the form of being asked to join or participate in other aspects of The Continuing Committee (such as becoming a playtester, for example). Now is your chance to make your mark by creating materials which will inspire fans of both Star Trek and card gaming the world over.

How do I apply for the position?

Application for the position is as easy as writing an article for display on The Continuing Committee's website. These application articles are always "deck list with strategy" pieces, and become the property of The Continuing Committee upon submission (whether or not the author is asked to join the writing team). No compensation is given for this application article, but its submission may be credited to your work product should you be invited to join the team.

To begin this process, send an email stating the intended topic of your application article to The Continuing Committee's Editor in Chief, Darren Lacoste (dlacoste@cfl.rr.com). You must include strategies for your missions, deck, and dilemma pile. Once your topic is confirmed to not overlap any other content under production, you will be sent an email that starts a two-week clock. Your article must be submitted with the proper formatting by the end of those fourteen days.

What standards should my article adhere to?

Formatting of your article is critical for its speedy uploading to https://www.trekcc.org. It will be reviewed for content, continuity, spelling, grammar, and consistency. Articles on this site have a definite 'look' due to our standardized writing protocols; samples of our work and standards will be provided to you once your topic is approved. Of particular note are (1) primary headings are in bold, whereas secondary headings are in italics, and (2) any cards of significance to the article need to have .html linking to The Continuing Committee's website. (When creating .html links, use https://www.trekcc.org as a starting place for card image searching.) Also worth mentioning, all Second Edition cards that have a subtitle need to have it listed after the title in parentheses (regardless of whether or not another card exists with the same card title). Any submission you make needs to be in an editable text format. Both First Edition and Second Edition writers are desired.

These standards seem a bit...stringent.

It is true that many of these standards may at first appear rigid, but they have evolved over years of writing and editing. Please don't feel overwhelmed by having to absorb it all at once; with practice, writing a 'standardized-format' article becomes second nature.

I still have more questions...

Please send your questions, as well as any other desired email correspondence, to: dlacoste@cfl.rr.com

Thank you for your interest, and good luck!
