So, I'm a New/Old First Edition Player, Original Series Edition

by Maggie Geppert, Vice Chairman

6th February 2018

Nilz Baris: There must be thousands of them.

Capt. Kirk: Hundreds of thousands.

Spock: 1,771,561. That's assuming one tribble, multiplying with an average litter of 10, producing a new generation every 12 hours over a period of three days.

                                                                                    -“The Trouble with Tribbles”

In this series, I will show off some beginner level decks that people have sent to me.  Today’s deck is Brian Sykes’ “TOS Week Beginner Deck.”  I’ll start off by thanking Brian for building this deck specifically for OS week.  The TOS faction is slightly more difficult to play by virtue of the fact that you have to use a Time Location to Report your non-mirror [OS] [1E-AU] personnel.

Missions

Protect the Timeline

Agricultural Assessment is the starting point for this deck, as that is where you play the Sherman’s Peak time location.  That time location will get you Deep Space Station K-7, which allows a free report of your [1E-OS] personnel once per turn.  The rest of the missions are a very ENGINEER heavy set.  Automated Repair Station is probably the best place to seed your Federation Outpost for easy access to SpacedockRepair Mission is another easy space mission, with Explore Dyson Sphere a slightly more difficult mission.  As for the remaining planets, Cargo Rendezvous and Reported Activity look equally doable.

Other Seeds

Probably the most important card in the deck is Protect the Timeline.  It gives you a free report for personnel native to your time location.  It also allows you to move back and forth from Sherman’s Peak time location to Agricultural Assessment.  Personnel from past or future time locations need to travel to the 24th Century in order to do missions, so you need a reliable way to time travel.  Be careful, as it restricts your free reports to those at your time location, so keeps you from doing too much free report salad.  Temporal Conduit also allows you to move your personnel between your time location and the 24th century.  It will also get Temporal Investigations out, which you can use as a draw engine.

Another fun seed card is the Storage Compartment Door, which opens your Tribbles side deck.  This side deck is rarely used, mostly because people find it annoying.  But that’s OK because it’s supposed to be annoying.  The tribbles are meant to slow your opponent down.  They can make your non-Klingon personnel less cunning and stop them or lower Klingons’ integrity.  You can also make Trouble with your Tribbles.  These cards allow your Tribbles to boost the chaos they create.

Christopher Pike

Brian has provided us with notes on dilemma combos.  I hadn’t seen Rules of Obedience before.  This filter/wall kills off a high integrity personnel and then “God” requires you to have two personnel with Integrity > 7.  If you don’t, you lose a ship and can’t attempt unless you have a ship present.  It gets followed up with Talosian Cage.  This dilemma has a hefty requirement of 3 Empathy or Christopher Pike.  Otherwise you lose two females or one male with the most skill dot icons.

Draw Deck

Brian has some good play note to go with this deck.  He suggests that Christopher Pike is your big hero for the deck and should be your Defend Homeworld download.  He lets you use your seeded Taking Charge to get out Process Ore: MiningLt. D’Amato is your support personnel with Geology×2 who will allow you to use that draw engine to its maximum effect.  You can also use Taking Charge to get out Prepare Landing Party early on to score extra points.  Other than that, he says play two free personnel a turn and then Kivas Fajo or download a ship with Call for Reinforcements.  Throw bodies at missions until you solve three.

What I’ve Learned from This Deck

BCSWowbagger’s Rulebook has a very nice drop-down menu which gave me a hint on how to do time travel.
