“Kazon sects do not help one another.”
-Culluh from “Maneuvers”
In this series, I will show off some beginner level decks that people have sent to me. Today’s deck Ken Tufts “Quick and simple Kazon Solver v1.4.”
Missions
Like the Voyager deck I analyzed last week, this Delta Quadrant doesn’t care about the You Are a Monument Rule. Also like that one, the most important mission in the deck is Liberation. Not only will you will seed Caretaker’s Array there, but it is only one of two missions at which to seed your outpost. The other mission where the outpost can go is Investigate Quantum Singularity. At 45 points, this is probably one of the missions you want to do. Another high-point mission to attempt is Cure Deadly Virus, although it doesn’t seem to be a mission in the Kazon’s wheelhouse (more on this later). Another fairly easy high-point mission is Repair Memorial, though the -2 attribute reduction for your personnel could be a bit off-putting. Salvage Operation is another risky choice. The deck does have all three skills – ENGINEER, Archaeology and Greed, but there are only 2 personnel with the last one. Finally, you could attempt to Transport Colonists, which gives a bonus for having empathy. There are 4 empaths in the deck, so this could also be an easy high-point option.
Other Seeds
Caretaker’s Array here allows you to seed the version of Voyager from Basics. You can use it to [DL] Home Away from Home, which will allow you to play matching personnel to Voyager, and once per turn on free personnel. Leader of the Sect is seeded to help you get out a Maje early in the game. I suspect Culluh in the Q’s Tent is the target for this card. Your support personnel, Rabek, is also there. You’ll use Defend Homeworld to get out Penk, who will then fetch Hajur. He’ll be running one of the draw engines, Process Ore: Mining. Chakotay seems to be the target for Ancestral Vision, but I’m not sure how to get him out quickly to run that other draw engine.
Oh buddy, Ken’s seeded not one, but two Quantum Incursions. Oh dear gods. Now, I don’t think I’ve discussed this Doorway in one of these articles, but it’s a pretty notorious card. QI seeds like a dual dilemma. This is the card from the 20th Anniversary set that is supposed to be homage to the Fajo Collection. Therefore it is weird. It has a QR code on it that you scan, which will then randomly give you one of six different options for how you get past a wall. For some decks this is a devastating dilemma, especially since nearly all of the options are quite difficult and specialized.
Draw Deck
Besides Voyager and Home Away from Home, the other main free report mechanism for this deck is The Kazon Collective. This incident, which is downloaded by the Kazon Outpost, allows you to report a Kazon to the maje of his sect for free once each turn. You’ll be playing Nistrims for free this game, with Culluh out early for Leader of the Sect. The Kazon always need help, and there are some quite interesting choices for that. First off, I see two copies of Temporal Micro-Wormhole. You’ll get Dr. Telek R’Mor with it and also Doctor McCoy. He’s the reason why Cure Deadly Virus looks doable, with the help of Rabek. He’ll also get I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer for you, which will get you a Geology Personnel to help Process Ore even more efficiently.
What I’ve Learned from This Deck
Surprisingly, I’ve learned that I now feel comfortable on a basic level of playing the game again. I was able to look at this deck pretty quickly and figure out what most of the basic gameplay mechanisms were right off the bat. I feel like I could print this one out and do OK with it, as long as my friends don't kick me out of the tourney for playing with two QIs. Now I just need Ken to tell me home wrong all of my guesses are.
