Weekly 1E Roundup - 7 AUGUST 2019

by Charlie Plaine, Director of First Edition

7th August 2019

Welcome to the Wednesday 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you've got an event coming up and you'd like to be featured in this column, feel free to contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich.

Programming Note: Once again, I'm sorry to report this is going to be a brief column. I returned home from GenCon late last night and went straight to work, leaving me with little time to write. I hope you'll forgive me and join me next week for a more traditional column.

The Big News

This weekend is the 2019 World Championships, hosted by the Austrian players in Wien, Austria. Twenty-two (22) players are pre-registered for this championship event, including some of the highest rated players in the world. I know that I'll be watching the site and our social media feeds for updates - will you? And don't forget to vote for who you think will emerge victorious in Lucas Thompson's (edgeofhearing) thread.

Tournament Reports

Mark Muston (mark_mustonjr) claimed the title of 2019 United States National Champion during that event at GenCon 2019. I haven't written much about Mark, but this is his second major title this year after winning the Cube Draft Trek Masters Series even in Sioux Falls, South Dakota earlier this year. Clearly, Mark has benefitted from playing with Kevin Jaeger (Hoss-Drone) regularly. His deck, a very reliable [TNG] [Fed] deck he calls Thats just even lazier writing, was a wonder to behold. I had the privilege of playing him in the final round, and were it not for an early seeding mistake and a mid-game miscalculation (which he kindly writes about in his tournament report), I might have held him at bay.

Federation was popular in this event, with myself (in 3rd place) and James Booker (Shooter McGavin; in 5th place) also playing similar decks. Mine was the same speed deck I've played before, stolen from Lucas Thompson, while James played a general Federation Cadet/shuttle drop deck. Second place went to Andrew Bowling (Kova4H9), who played a [22] Starfleet/Vulcan deck; I have the deck list, and I'll get it up and online soon. His father, three-time World Champion David Bowling (tomek), took 4th place with a versatile Bajoran deck. Dave told me during our game that he'd misread my spaceline and set up his deck to be less optimal, which I took as a complement. Sean O'Reilly (Jono) had to miss the first two rounds due to a late, and subsequently delayed flight, and Herman Chan (clonedwhyme) had to drop early to make a True Dunegon run. Still, it was a fun and well attended event, and congrats again to Mark. I'll reach out to him, and publish an interview with him soon.

I'd love to feature all of the types of games in this column, not just tournaments! Just send me an email or a private message, and I'll be happy to advertise your event or games to the world in a future column. My contact information is at the bottom of every column each week.

In order to promote all forms of play, we're launching a new program designed to encourage everyone to play 1E the first weekend of each month. We'll be starting officially the first weekend of September, from Friday, September 6th through Sunday, September 8th. You can play a tournament, a casual game or games or just get together to build decks and talk trek. Stay tuned for more details, but start making plans now!

Tournament Previews

It's finally time for the 2019 World Championshipw. With twenty-two players pre-registered, it's on pace to be the biggest First Edition tournament in years. And that's well-earned, because the quality of the competition will be equally impressive. And with a host of side events of all formats, there will be more Trek played over this coming weekend that has been played over most of the past few months combined. It's going to be exciting to watch (and exhausting to write about), but I can't wait. I hope you'll all take some time this weekend to follow the news and cheer on those participating.

But before I go for the week, let's take a look at the Top 10 of the pre-registered players, where they stand, and their most recent performances. I hope this will give you a picture of how fierce the competition will be this weekend.
