The Wrath of the Alliance

by Michael Shea, Regent of the Alliance

3rd October 2019

Since the long-awaited introduction of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance (KCA) in set 46 Shattered Mirror the affiliation has made quite the impact on Second Edition. While the card-pool of nouns is limited, the affiliation has access to a number of verb tools to help them complete missions and score victories. Tools like The Central Command and The Enemy of My Enemy as well as Standard Punishment have proven their worth in the typical KCA deck. But, up until now, the most successful KCA builds have leaned almost entirely on the Cardassian wing of the KCA for their most impressive victories.

Now, with the introduction of the Regent's flagship - Regency 1 - that can begin to change. Let's take a look at the card...

Regency 1

When you play this ship, you may discard an [AU] card from hand to download a Maneuver event for each Mirror mission you command. Right now, there's one such mission in the game: Bajor, Terok Nor. But, the funny thing about keywords in this set - is they tend to pop up when you least expect them. So, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if we see the Mirror keyword again sometime soon.

With the Regency 1, a whole new tactic for the KCA player becomes available - the use of battle to obtain swift victory. For example use your Regency 1 to put a Cardassian in your discard pile for later use with Enemy of My Enemy to download War Without End. With the right set-up, fro example a lucky draw of Call to Arms (or the download of such with Quark, Simple Barkeep) and a Brink of War in your opponent's core, your battling ships can easily earn you twenty points if you've got the right KCA folks in play. If you manage to do that twice, you're well on your way to a two-mission win!

The attached deck is meant to do just that. The idea is relatively simple, use your dilemma pile to slow your opponent down while you take advantage of Quark and 0413-Theta to gain the counter advantage you need to play those expensive nouns fast. Then use your verb support from Central Command, Enemy of My Enemy, Standard Punishment, and Racial Disdain along with the powerful abilities on Garak, Worf, Odo, and Mardel to power through your opponent's dilemmas.

Now, if only Regent Worf had the Commander: Regency 1 keyword. Maybe we'll see that someday, too...
