McCoy heals a Horta

by Sean O'Reilly, Staff Writer

24th December 2019

One of the last cards we designed for Inheritance was I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer. It turned out to be a good choice to bring into Second Edition from First Edition. It’s both an Interrupt and [TOS]-centered, card ideas we had not had in the set up to this point.

Let’s first look at the 1E card text:

[Int]I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer
Nullifies Horta. OR Adds Geology to one MEDICAL personnel until end of turn. OR Once per game, downloads a Geology personnel to your MEDICAL and OFFICER.

The interrupt (which Dr. McCoy can special download) can either nullify a Horta, add Geology to a MEDICAL personnel or download a Geology personnel to your MEDICAL and OFFICER personnel.

Now let’s look at the original pitch for a potential 2E version:

[Int]I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer
When your Medical personnel is facing a dilemma, he or she gains Geology until the end of that dilemma.
Order - Stop your Medical personnel and Officer personnel to download a Geology personnel with cost less than or equal to those two personnel, then place them on a headquarters mission where they could be played.

The interrupt has two different functions. The first one works when your Medical personnel is facing a dilemma. Unlike the 1E version, this one gives 2 Geology to your personnel – but only until the end of the dilemma.

There are 22 dilemmas the Interrupt can help you overcome including Breaking the Ice, Dangerous Climb, Hard of Heart, Microbrain and Whisper in the Dark.

The second function can be used during your Execute Orders phase. For stopping a Medical personnel and an Officer personnel, you can to download a Geology personnel who costs less than the personnel you stopped and then place them on a headquarters mission where they could be played. The Medical/Officer connection is pulled direction from the 1E card. The First Edition card only let you do the download part once per game because downloading is much more powerful in 1E. The Second Edition version doesn't have a limit because you still need to play the personnel from your hand - and you can only do that one a future turn.

There were some issues with that initial pitch. We liked the idea but it wasn’t culturally enforced. So we came up with this revised idea was this:

[Int]I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer
When your TOS Medical personnel is facing a dilemma, he or she gains 2 Geology until the end of that dilemma.
Order - Stop your [TOS] Medical personnel and [TOS] Officer personnel to download a Geology personnel up to the cost of the personnel you stopped and place him or her on a headquarters mission where he or she could be played.

With this revised version, the first function now only works on a [TOS] Medical personnel and now it’s 2 Geology the personnel will game. We also added two [TOS] icons to the second function, too. However, another change was quick to come:

[Int]I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer
When your [TOS] Medical personnel is facing a dilemma, he or she gains 2 Geology until the end of that dilemma.
Order - Stop your Medical personnel and Officer personnel to download a [TOS] Geology personnel and place him or her on a headquarters mission where he or she could be played. Remove this interrupt from the game.

The third version of the card saw the [TOS] icon in the Execute Orders portion move from the personnel you are stopping to the personnel you are downloading. This helped with cultural enforcement so the downloaded personnel could only has a [TOS] icon and couldn't be any [NA] personnel with Geology. We also added the “remove from the same” portion to prevent abuse.

The card then went through some polishing by rules and proofreaders to come up with this:

[Int]I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer
While your [TOS] Medical personnel is facing a dilemma, he or she gains 2 Geology until the end of that dilemma.
Order - Download a [TOS] Geology personnel. Unless you choose to stop your Medical personnel and Officer personnel, remove this interrupt from the game.

I'm a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer The final version cleaned up the Order section. You start with the download, then decide whether to stop your Medical and Officer personnel (still a call back to the 1E card) or to remove the interrupt from the game.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the personnel you can download with I'm a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer:
•Clark Terrell, Reliant Captain
Evans
Farrell
•Gary Mitchell, Godlike Mutant
•John Harriman, Captain of the Enterprise
Karl Jaeger
Matthews

The first thing you should notice is none of those personnel cost more than two. Four of them are also non-unique. We think this will help keep the interrupt's power in check.

I’m a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer might not just stay in [TOS] decks. The card might “bleed” over into [TNG] and [DS9][E] decks. That’s because Clark Terrell and John Harriman can be played to those respective Earth headquarters. However, neither of them are incredibly powerful, so we felt this little bonus to movie-era personnel might be okay.
