Welcome to Worlds 2020 in Chicago

by Maggie Geppert, Executive Officer

19th February 2020

Chicago has the privilege of hosting the 2020 World Championships August 6th – 9th at Good Games Chicago.  We previously hosted the 2018 Continental Championships here, and this venue has a lot going for it.

Right now, I just have the main events scheduled in the system.  I’ll be looking to schedule side events very soon.  I’d love to hear what you want to play, so head over to the 1E and 2E Gameplay forums to tell me about what kind of side events you’d like to participate in. In the meantime, here are some things I do know.

Thursday, August 6th

Events on this day will be at my house in Mount Prospect, IL.  This is due to the one unfortunate drawback of the venue; we are not allowed to bring in alcohol.  I don’t want to say much right now, but I can promise you that one of the side events will require it, so it needs to be at my place.  If you haven’t been to the Basement of Doom before, be warned.  You will be offered a “welcome shot” of Malört.

Friday, August 7th

This will mark Day 1 of the First Edition World Championships.  This format is five rounds of constructed, complete OTF.  The store will open at 10:00 am for us and we will kick things off at 10:30 am.  The top eight players in the field will move onto Day 2.

Saturday, August 8th

Things get started with Day 1 of Second Edition.  This tournament will be seven rounds of constructed, complete with standard rules.  The store will again be opening an hour early for us, so this event will start at 9:30 am.  Again, the top eight players will play in Day 2.

At 5:00 pm, Day 2 of First Edition will begin.  The format for Day 2 is up to you, dear players.  I have put a poll up asking for your input on the format.

Sunday, August 9th

Day 2 of Second Edition begins at 10:00 am sharp, which is when the store opens.  Again, there is a poll asking about format.

We will close out the weekend with Tribbles World Championships starting at 2:00 pm this day.

Finally, if you’re wondering about transportation and hotels or what other attractions Chicago offers, please check out the linked articles I wrote in 2018 on those topics.  I will have updated information for you on those topics in the coming weeks.
