Welcome to the Weekly 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for content, you can contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich. I'm happy to write about your tournaments, get togethers, or other 1E-related goings-on. But for now, let's get into the column and see what's been going on in the world of First Edition!

The Big News

Last week, I got to announce a cool new program we've been working on for months: the Promo-a-Week program. Over the next few months, we'll be releasing one alternate-image virtual promo each week when we aren't previewing a new expansion. Then, after all seventeen (17) cards in this set of promos have been revealed, we'll make the complete PDF available. But you don't have to wait, either, as each new promo is made printable immediately upon release. Last week, the first promo - Medical Tricorder - was revealed, and we'll have a new one for you this Friday. Here's a clue: it's a well-known Trill outside of their usual affiliation. Check back each week, on Friday, to see the latest promo of the week!

This Day in Trek

I am thrilled to recognize today as the birthday of Mr. Wil Wheaton - actor, writer, and all around geek icon. Of course, among Star Trek circles Wheaton is known for Wesley Crusher - a personal favorite character of yours truly. I really looked up to Wesley as a young man watching The Next Generation, and have enjoyed following Wil's career in the decades since. Most recently, he's returned to the world of Star Trek to host The Ready Room, and after-show discussing episodes of Star Trek: Picard. In this author's opinion, he did a fantastic job and I hope he returns for future seasons.

Mr. Wheaton, who is turning forty-eight (48) years old today, has been guest starting on television for most of the past decade. While most notably he's been on The Big Bang Theory, he's also played on shows like Eureka, Leverage, and Criminal Minds. Aside from acting in front of the camera, he's written several books and done a ton of voice acting. He's a personal hero of mine, so forgive me for gushing! But I hope you'll join me in wishing him a happy birthday today!

Tournament Reports

Last week, we had four (4) players gather for Tuesday Night Tribbles, with Dan Hamman (SirDan) picking up the win. Dan played "eRescue" to breed a total 633,232 tribbles for the win. Hostess Maggie Geppert (jadziadax8) played "Evading the Clones" to 2nd place with a total of 413,124. Eric Robinett (rycar60) and Michael Van Breemen took 3rd and 4th, with very close scores of 302,222 and 301,102 respectively. Looks like a good time had by all.

Tournament Previews

Tuesday Night Tribbles continues next week, where as of now three players have pre-registered to battle it out. Michael Van Breemen, Kris Sonsteby (LORE), and Maggie herself are waiting for you to come out and join them. Tribbles is simple, easy to learn, and easier to play - so make some time to join this weekly event. As part of the Subspace Championship Series, you'll have a chance to earn special prizes! Decks can be provided if needed, so check it out!

If you're looking for some old-school, bare-knuckle tournament with the insanity of pure First Edition, the Brian Sykes (Armus) is hosting a tournament for you. Kicking off this Friday, July 31st is his Open Constructed event where pretty much anything goes. That's right folks - this is OPEN, not OTF, which means there's no ban list and mission stealing is the name of the game. Right now, four (4) brave souls are pre-registered to play: Michael Van Breemen, Brian himself, Dan Hamman, and Austin Chandler (DarkSabre). If you're up for the challenge, go sign up for this online tournament and bring your craziest deck!

Meanwhile, if you are in a part of the world where gatherings are allow, and if you have upcoming events, virtual get togethers, or anything else scheduled that's 1E related, let me know. I'd love to feature you and your friends in this column. I typically only see them if they're scheduled in our tournament software, so if you're not using that, please let me know!

Short Treks (In Other News)

• Do you want to see Xindi added to 1E? This past week's Friday question was about how - and if - Xindi should be introduced to First Edition. As expected, there are varied opinions but the thread has also spawned an interesting discussion about how often affiliations are supported after their introductions. Check it out and sound off!


• How would you modify starter decks to use The Squire's Rules? Brian Sykes (Armus) posted a topic about how to modify starters to use random dilemmas. His goal is to make the decks as new player friendly, at the local level, as possible. Which dilemmas would you recommend he use?


• How do you feel about The Neutral Zone? It's been several months since The Neutral Zone was released, and we're looking to debrief all of you on how you feel about it. Did this expansion meet your expectations, or fall short? Let us know!
