Make My Deck Better; Bassen Rift

by Maggie Geppert, Executive Officer

31st July 2020

Bassen Rift, Interdict Genocidal Praetor

Ever since The Omega Directive came out, I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with Bassen Rift, Interdict Genocidal Praetor.  Most of the missions in this set fit right in to deck archetypes I’ve already played with, but this one has eluded me.  I thought a lot about where to go with it.

I’ve been playing a lot of TNG lately, so I decided I wanted to try to build a Romulan Dissident deck.  It felt thematic, since the mission itself comes from Star Trek: Nemesis and many of the Romulan Dissidents come from that movie.  The other Dissidents have a lot of Honor and high integrity, so they do well on the mission.  If you throw in the [NA] Vulcan Dissidents, you have a good skill matrix.

Alternatives to Fighting

This led me to thinking about the other four missions in the deck.  Since I’m using [NA] personnel, I need to use the Seat of Power, rather than Patient Stronghold for the headquarters.  If I want to do a two-mission win, I can use Hurried Departure and a 40-point mission for the win.  I looked around and settled on Deliver Ancient Artifact for the second mission.  Filling in the mission selection, I settled on Kreetassa, Perform Intricate Ritual (for Code of the Ushaan) and Evade Borg Vessel as a second Nebula mission.

For dilemmas, I chose to go with a standard attrition pile, with a few support dilemmas for my theme.  I put in Brave Words as a support card for the Span theme.  I added Unfair Terms, since it will only cost 2. Finally, I added in Alternatives to Fighting to really hammer anyone using ships with Range of 7.  It’s a fantastic, underused dilemma in my mind. Moving a ship to a Span 4 Nebula, then damaging them?  Brutal!

The deck itself is simple.  Most of the personnel are Dissidents, but I had to add in other personnel to fill in skill gaps.  You use The New Resistance to spam out personnel.  Repurposed Transmission is a nice little Interrupt-prevention tool that will likely be free with all my dissidents.  My plan, such as it is at this time, is to try to get Hurried Departure out quickly to earn an extra 10 points when I complete Bassen Rift.  Then I’ll go over to do Deliver Ancient Artifact for the win.

Now, I’m still a little worried about this deck.  It doesn’t feel tight right now.  This is where I need your advice, my friends.  What should I add to this deck to make it better?  Should I Prejudice and Politics for another bonus point option? Should I ditch the Dissidents and go with a Reman theme instead?  Should I give up on Romulans and stick with the TNG I know?  Please, help me Make This Deck Better.
