Cats of Peace

by Ross Fertel, Playing with Yarn

2nd April 2021

Dogs of Wars released one week ago meaning that it is tournament legal today. There is a lot in a full-sized set with the main focus being the Breen entering the Dominion and the Cardassians trying to escape it. There are also some cards for the other affiliations native to the Alpha Quadrant. Whichever way you choose, you are predominantly looking at Deep Space Nine property logos. If you want to look outside that sandbox, there are some options for you. Think of how Assign Mission Specialists brought life to decks outside the realm of Borg and Federation despite not having a single mission specialist in that set.

Battle of Cardassia

Battle of Cardassia – The story cue is right out of the final episode of Deep Space Nine, but this is very Next Generation friendly, at least in game terms. Not only that, but it is also very PAQ friendly. Those skills are super-duper easy, even in multiple. The ship requirement for the booster is almost laughably easy. Remember, your ships do not have to work together, they just have to be at the mission.

Decimate Homeworld

Decimate Homeworld – The vast fleet has grown to several affiliations as of late. TNG Ferengi have a good amount of ships but let us not forget the old standbys of the Kazon or Hirogen. You just need to get a big enough fleet, mosey on over and rake in the goodness. It is nice to bring an older strategy to prominence.

Distorted Refelction

Distorted Reflection – A quick look at the gametext pretty much dictates that you need Deep Space Nine iconed personnel to get the effects. It does not have the icon, though. Free Report Salad is a thing for the Federation, and it is an open question as to if the Cardassians can follow suit but if they do, this card helps solve that equation.

Grand Nagus Rom

Grand Nagus Rom – A boost to Ferengi integrity? By 2? Across the board? That will take a lot of them from horrible integrity to passably decent. Add in a Kukalaka and you are in the integrity business. Though Kukalaka is not a Nagus, sadly.

Increase White production

Increase White Production – That little Vidiian icon on this mission is a goldmine. The skills are right up their alley. The points might not seem like much, and they really are not, but you can get non-aligned Son'a out fairly easily. In OTF, you might have to wander out into the Alpha Quadrant anyway so you might as well reap the rewards. One could make the argument that this is pound for pound the best card in the set for a specific affiliation.

Battle of Cardassia

Mantle of the Empire – While Martok is probably the first Chancellor that comes to mind, we saw a decent chunk in The Next Generation. Okay, we saw two, one of whom is a viable target for this card, but that is enough to make use of this equipment in that decktype, particularly with Warp Core card titled Legitimate Leader of the Empire.

Battle of Cardassia

One Big Happy Family – The way this card is written you are expected to do this with your combined Cardassian Dominion deck if not purely Dominion and wait for the rewards to come in. But looking at the Cardassians and the Cardassian alone, this is still achievable. Tora Ziyal. Kira. Odo. Quark. Ilon Tandro. Horath. You just need three of those five. With enough diversity this is achievable.

Resist Occupying Force

Resist Occupying Force – Forty points for readily available skills? Sounds pretty nice. It sounds even nicer for the Romulans. They will need a bit of espionage to make it happen, but they have a lot of mission specialists to go into the fifties, or over, with few issues.

Vic Fontaine

Vic Fontaine – Twenty points? Yes, please. But with nine specific people that do not play well in other decks and require a lot of work to mix? That final hurdle can be overcome with a Ferengi Trading Post. The rest still takes a little more work, both to get in play and to bring together. Do not forget that you have TNG Worf, O'Brien and Quark. There are also OS O'Brien, Worf, Sisko, Bashir, Dax, and Odo. Yes, it requires a bit more work than simply playing Deep Space Nine outright but at twenty points it is worth taking a shot at least.

Whether you color inside the lines or out, have fun with whichever path you chart. Dogs of War is ready to be played today and would not be possible without the efforts of Rules, Creative, Playtesting, Proofreading, Programming and Art. Have fun!
