Chair's Challenge 2021: You Are of Bajor

by Charlie Plaine, Chair of the Board

27th August 2022

The Celestial Temple

Ladies, gentlemen, and non-binary friends, it's time for a new Global Chair's Challenge. These challenges are issued by the Chair of the CC's Board of Directors, which is yours truly in this case, and offer special prizes in exchange for deck building to meet challenges. The last one of these events was held during the 2019 World Championships, and offered World Championship Promos to players that couldn't make it to Vienna, Austria. Today, I'm happy to announce we're doing a similar program this year.

The 2021 World Championships take place October 8th-10th in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. And now, with the Global Chair's Challenge, you'll have a chance to win this year's World Championship promos even if you can't make it to the Windy City. For First Edition, that's The Celestial Temple time location; for Second Edition, you'll get a Denorios Belt (Locate Celestial Temple) mission foil. And last but not least, Tribbles players can earn a shiny 100,000 Confront featuring Kai Winn and the Pah-Wraiths.

So you can you participate? Simple - do what we always want you to do and play Trek. Specifically, any and all registered tournaments from Friday, September 24th until Sunday, October 17th will automatically enter you in the drawing. Each game is a separate contest, so playing in 1E tournaments gets you entries in the 1E contest, 2E tournaments for the 2E contest, and Tribbles tournaments for the Tribbles contest. If you plan a double- or triple-header for Worlds weekend, you'll get at least one entry in each drawing. That's good value!

You can also earn bonus entries by winning the tournament, running (but not playing in) the tournament, or taking up the Chair's Challenge with your deck. What are those challenges, you ask? I'm glad you did - there's a different one for each game, all themed around our Bajoran friends since this is the Year of the Bajoran:

First Edition
To take up the 2021 Chair's Challenge, you need to play a deck that qualifies for any of the achievements we award for playing Bajoran. Specifically, there are six (6) qualifying achievements and your deck, if eligible, will qualify for one of them:

Denorios Belt (Locate Celestial Template)

Bajoran Player
Your deck uses only [Baj] facilities and mostly [Baj] ships and personnel.

Bajoran/Klingon Treaty Player
Your deck uses at least one [Baj] facility, one [Kli] facility, and at least 35% [Baj] personnel and ships and 35% [Kli] personnel and ships.

Federation/Bajoran Treaty Player
Your deck uses at least one [Baj] facility, one [Fed] facility, and at least 35% [Baj] personnel and ships and 35% [Fed] personnel and ships.

Bajoran/Dominion Treaty Player
Your deck uses at least one [Baj] facility, one [Dom] facility, and at least 35% [Baj] personnel and ships and 35% [Dom] personnel and ships.

Cardassian/Bajoran Treaty Player
Your deck uses at least one [Baj] facility, one [Car] facility, and at least 35% [Baj] personnel and ships and 35% [Car] personnel and ships.

Romulan/Bajoran Treaty Player
Your deck uses at least one [Baj] facility, one [Rom] facility, and at least 35% [Baj] personnel and ships and 35% [Rom] personnel and ships.

100,000 Confront

Second Edition
The Second Edition challenge for 2021 is very similar. Your deck must qualify for any of the achievements we award for playing Bajoran in 2E. Specifically, there are three (3) qualifying achievements and your deck, if eligible, will qualify for one of them:

Bajoran Player
Your deck uses only Bajor as its only headquarters and mostly [Baj] ships and personnel.

Strange Bedfellows: Bajoran/Romulan Player
Your deck uses Bajor and Romulus as its only headquarters and at least seven (7) [Baj] cards and seven (7) [Rom] cards.

Uneasy Alliance: Bajoran/Cardassian Player
Your deck uses Bajor and Cardassia Prime as its only headquarters and at least ten (10) [Baj] cards and ten (10) [Car] cards.

For both the First Edition and Second Edition challenges, your decks are allowed to qualify for other achievements as well. Do some exploring on the Achievements page, there are quite a few excellent options you can combine with the challenge achievements. In addition, the entire family of each of these achievements apply, so if you get Bajoran Victor instead of Bajoran Player, you still qualify.

Tribbles
Don't worry, we aren't leaving Tribbles out. We thought it would be fun if we made the challenge also Bajoran themed, but unlike 1E and 2E, there aren't achievements to define what that means. Instead, we thought about the mechanical space Bajorans are known for (the discard pile) and threw in any powers that feature a Bajoran in the image.

The Tribbles challenge is to play with a deck that uses only powers that use the phrase "discard pile" in their text. Additionally, any power that has any printing featuring a Bajoran character is also allowed. For the record, that is this list of powers:

Okay, that's your Chair's Challenge for 2021. For each event you play in (or run, but not play in) between Friday, September 24th and Sunday, October 17th, you'll automatically be entered in the drawing for the appropriate World Championship promo. If you happen to win the tournament, you'll be given a bonus entry in the drawing. And if you take up the challenge by building your deck to match, you'll get a third entry. And that's each time you play during the challenge period! Here is a quick summary of each challenge to remind you:

We'll be giving out at least five (5) of each promo, but we might add more based on participation. So contact your local play groups, schedule some events, and get entries into the 2021 Global Chair's Challenge event! But most of all, have fun and play Trek!
