Emergency Ban Notice for Temporal Narcosis

by Dan Hamman, Staff Writer

24th September 2022

Revolving Door

Earlier this week a combo was reported to the First Edition Rules Team. They passed it along to the Balance Team, and it was posted to the boards for discussion here.

The two cards in the combo are Revolving Door and Temporal Narcosis. First a card play is used to place Revolving Door on a doorway that is important to the opponent. In order to make use of that doorway, the opponent must “use” the text of Revolving door, and subsequently playing Temporal Narcosis will grant an extra turn.

There are ways of designing a deck that does not stumble into this combo, namely not playing any doorways. But Balance believes that Doorways are an important enough card type that it should not be a trade-off for extra turns to the opponent. If there were a Ref card that limited Temporal Narcosis, it is likely that Balance would have advertised the combo and let the meta adjust (as done with the recent Empok Nor/Space Time Portal usage).

It is interesting to note that Revolving Door received an errata back in mid 2017 to its current text, in order to remove it from the ban list. So this combo has been out there lurking for over five years! Congratulations are in order for finding it.

Naughty Card

However, this interaction was not intended. Temporal Narcosis was designed to be a counter to over use of Revolving Door, not a booster for it.

And since Temporal Narcosis has been used but once outside of this combo in the modern era, the Balance team is taking the step to immediately ban Temporal Narcosis. There are several options for errata, so it should make a quick return. Also it sounds like Rules will be looking at the term "using" as well.

About the Balance Team

The Balance Team is made up of representatives from the community. It was originally designed to be a rotating cast, with representation from the Rules Team, the Design Team, and players. There are currently two openings.
