That said, it's nice to have a little dilithium here and there to supplement things a bit. If you get the monthly pass it's a great deal with 100 dilithium a day for 30 days, and it's only $3.99 US. Even without spending money, you can earn dilithium through achievements such as acquiring and immortalizing certain quantities of personnel. But don't feel required to spend money if you don't want to - you can certainly enjoy the game without it.
If you do decide to make a purchase, the top priorities on what to use dilithium on are increasing shuttle bays so you can send out more shuttle missions at a time, and increasing your crew slots so you can hold more active crew members.

How do you get golden characters and level them up (adding stars,I mean)? And I wanna join the trekcc fleet. I'm currently in another fleet. How can I leave that one and join you folks? It's possible to get gold characters without spending money, but it's rare and very slow. Play the weekend events hard to get good stuff. Also, you'll sometimes randomly get rare personnel in portal draws or even as the occasional gift from the developers (they gave everyone a gold Seven in Silver last week to celebrate the game's anniversary).
