Isn't the idea of the warp drive that it literally warps space around the ship so that points get closer to each other, therefore permitting the ship to travel longer distances in the same amount of time while not actually going any faster under its own propulsive power?

Turning off the engines (the warp drive at least) would just remove the space warp and leave the ship running at whatever impulse power it ordinarily maintains.

The idea of the warp drive is that it gets the Enterprise to the next plot point. ;)

None of the details hold up under any sort of scrutiny. hums MST3K theme

Aside: my favorite warp-related WTH is anytime they put someone in a shuttlecraft for hours when the Enterprise could be there in minutes or seconds. (e.g. La Forge is in an impulse shuttle for three hours. The Enterprise can cover that much ground in under a minute at warp 6. It probably took them longer than that just to launch the shuttle!)

I can imagine your reaction when K'Ehleyr was fired inside of a torpedo to rendezvous with the Enterprise the first time we saw her. ;)

After all I've read about Warp, I think this (second paragraph at least) really is the correct answer.

It seems there's even still-theoretical research into it now...?

I haven't seen MST3K, but what strikes me is that many (not all!) things -- say, youtube sketches -- poking fun at, or "debunking", other things, often don't have the full grasp of what was meant in the thing they think they are debunking.

I love e.g. the pitch meetings series, but sometimes he's dead wrong (but funny!) in his assumptions that there was some mistake or lack of logic.
It is a sort of fake news going viral, though... :shifty:

I have read several "manuals" that discuss warp drive, and while of course not plausible or functional now (maybe never), its purported function does render that joke moot.

Still... funny joke that shows, if we laugh, that we understand the current applications of inertia and lack of friction. 8)
