That was so bad as to elicit a so-bad-its-funny chuckle!

My personal two best examples of that:

1. Even though I had heard the term hors d'oeuvres before, I thought it was spelled orderves or something and hors d'oeuvres should be pronounced like a Klingon name of some sort.

2. Pronouncing facade as fuh-kaid for quite a while before I realized that was incorrect.

I can relate to this going the other way.

In my first French class, I kept reading the informal second person "toi" - pronounced "twa" in French - as "Toy"

Made perfect sense in my head at the time.

A couple of weeks ago, we were driving to our friends' house when Sprout suddenly tells his sister to close her eyes. When asked why, he said it was because we were passing a lin-gerrie shop.

Finally, an explanation...
