I got in a nerd fight with Benhosp on Friday. I have Chang as my number one Star Trek movie villain (fight me!)
Not picking a fight (never really thought about movie villains in that level of detail), but now I really want to know (a) why Chang and not Khan, and (b) where Khan is on the list.
Khan was never that great a villain. No real depth of character, just maniacal crazy superhuman.
Here's my rankings:
1.) Chang
2/3.) Kruge/Sybok
4.) Khan
I had it as Chang, Kruge, Khan, but BenHosp managed to convince me that Sybok was a really good villain (his #1) because he's a much deeper and more complex character with his own motivations ("Great villains always think they're the hero"), and while I maintain Chang as my #1, I'm now wrestling with myself for who should be in the #2 spot.
As for why Chang? I think it has a lot to do with Christopher Plummer's performance. He really captured the "Warrior Poet" vibe in a way that made the character memorable. Also, the fact that Chang was part of a galactic conspiracy and he was as effective in the court room as he was on the battlefield shows both range and depth that few other villains have been shown to have.
