They came back before the timeline branched. This would be the bottom part of the Y.
The branch had occurred because Q had already started interfering. They had to reverse what he had done. Failing to correct the changes (or doing nothing) results in the Confederation, making it already divergent. The "countdown" was for the last possible moment that they could reverse the changes, not when the branch itself occurs.

This was more Yesteryear than The Voyage Home. They went back because they always went back. A permanent change makes no sense since there is no reason for General Picard, President Hansen et al to go back.

Q gave a hint but was not the reason why the change happened as we saw in All Good Things.

The change was specifically because Q gave Soong the drive to do it. The Europa mission wasn't the main catalyst- it was Soong becoming a domineering voice in the future of humanity - as evidenced by the statue of him in the Confederation future. He wouldn't have done half of the stuff he did if Q didn't point him like a loaded gun.

But it is still very, very messy logic.

After watching the season finale, here's something I couldn't quite fathom:

Q shifts Picard and crew over to a timeline where he stops Rene Picard going on the mission, and Soong rises to power.

They travel to the past (in that timeline) and stop that happening, restoring the timeline... yet Rios stays behind and then becomes friends with Guinan, and the picture in the bar implies those events took place. So with the timeline restored, Guinan now has both 19th Century memories of meeting Picard with Samuel Clemens AND 21st Century of not knowing who Picard was when he wonders into her bar for the first time?

Also, can you imagine being a crewperson aboard the Stargazer...

One minute Picard, Rios, and Jurati are on the ship, then the Borg Queen beams over, and folk start shooting. In the blink of an eye, it's just Picard standing there, the captain and Jurati have disappeared, and then the Queen unmasks herself AS Jurati (who was standing right there a second ago!).

To quote Janeway: "Mister Kim, we're Starfleet officers. Weird is part of the job."

Writers have convinced themselves that, once multiple timeliness and time travel get involed, they can retcon anything. I dont particularly like it but it isnt likely to change so i go with it. Otherwise, almost anything scifi or comic related would make zero sense.

Agreed completely mostly. Where did the Borg come in from in the premier episode? Through "a hole in space-time"? Like this is an alternate universe version of the Borg? That makes sense if we're talking about branching realities (even if branching realities don't actually make sense), but Picard said that it's one timeline that had to be set right, which is why Rios is a fixture in Guinan's memory of the past or why Guinan even had memories of the 2024 adventure (or why Chateau Picard has bullet holes in the walls when Picard was growing up). Why is one set of outcomes part of Picard's future, but the other an offshoot? Did Queen Ag pop off to another universe so she could make a dramatic entrance? Or was she playing possum in another part of the galaxy and this was just like wormhole-ing in?

One of the great points of interest in Star Trek in general and Picard specifically is the universe in general and the post Dominion War/Romulas star exploding. Spending seven and a half of the ten hors takes away from that. They had some cool action sequences but every show can do a car chase; NCIS can't have an epic space battle. Going to essentially modern day Los Angeles saved on the budget but didn't really add much. Nostalgia is good but it can only take you so far. The bus sequence was a fun throwback but little else really landed.

Look where season one ended. The cast got together and defeated a minor villain. While there was still work to do in general, they would do it together. The Federation was in trouble but they would save it. That was all done away with in the opening episode which flashed forward to get us up to speed. It is fixed enough that Picard is back to being an admiral and giving a speech. Look at the progress from the start of Season One to the end and compare that to where season two began and ended.

They gave out pink slips for seemingly random reasons. Rios made the most sense since he is in the past and got a good sendoff, on the birthday of his actor no less. Queen-Jurati practically screamed out for a follow up cameo next season and Elnor, who no one knew what to do with so they fridged him, was brought back to life and will apparently not be back for the final season.

Pill did a fantastic job as the Queen, Jurati and everyone in between. She is a great actress and her absence will be felt. It is odd that she spent another year doing evil under the influence of someone else but she pulled it off.

Spiner was great as a bad guy and no one ever went wrong casting James Callas in anything. Also, this means both Baltars have Trek credentials. Seven got some good development thanks in no small part to both Jeri Ryan's acting and what had to be an influence of producer and Voyager author Kirsten Beyer.

Wheaton's appearance as Wesley gives me hope. There are casting spoilers for season three; the pink slips were probably so they could afford everyone, but he had a good continuation for his character. Wheaton has been involved in the community and it was great to see him in the episode proper.

One thing I found odd, it was great to see a same gender relationship along with a hetero one, but it is funny how they find the time for the latter and show so little of the former.
