After breaking down these cards the past several hours overnight, ill say this set looks fun overall nothing broken I believe but I'll be watching the new Worf and Mortal Q in the upcoming months.

My Top Cards:

Mortal Q
Gah Tek Or
Cyber Drone
Mark Jameson, Senior Mission Specialist
Worf, Single Minded
Spock, Flirting with Danger

Cards I dislike:

Second Breakfast - Not enough dilemmas to even bother using it.

Dukat, Intersteller Despot - Another [TN] Dukat? Seriously enough and this might be the worse one!!!

William T. Riker, Stirring Confident - Bring back horrible memories from the WORSE Series Finale In Trek History!!!

Tenak'talar, Dukat's Warship - SHOULD'VE had the same ability as Queen's Borg Cube! Total disappointment!

Starship Excelsior, Deserved Captaincy -Love the card text and image but HATE the [TOS] [E] stuff together. It's TOS!

Spock looks good, was hoping for Romulan Kirk as well. Kinda suprised that he did not make the cut. Both interrupts seem pretty good imho, especially the Second breakfast can be devastating in the right hands.

As for the TOS cards, I have been saying for 14 years now that the [E] icon should not have been done. The Starship Excelsior looks interesting, especially given the ability of Hikaru Sulu. 9 range could be also useful to overcome some nasty dilemmas that hurt small ships and also to move between the missions with the Harbinger dilemmas on them.

Personally, I'm looking forward to playing
  • Hot Mess - love the wordplay in the title, and the Damage it deals. Might prove to be a little easy to get by, but it's cheap enough to have a decent filter go in front.
  • Starbase 173 - for me, it's the "Baby Bear's Bed" of Diplomacy missions - 35 points, unInsurrectionable requirements, and a nice "When you complete" bonus. With the right ship, and the right crew, 35 quickly becomes 50.
  • Mark Jameson - the speed at which a [TNG] deck can do download exactly what/who they want is (even more) staggering.

You think that's a good thing?

I'm old enough to remember when Klingons and Borg got nutshots with the nerf bat due to their profligate downloading. Why would TNG be any different?

More importantly, why were the lessons of that era not carried forward (or if they were, what is the expectation that this won't be a problem)?

That remains to be seen, although I think so.

TNG aren't downloading up to three ships and personnel at the start of each turn (like the Borg were before Quintessence was "nerfed") or, again, downloading up to three personnel just for playing one (like the Klingons were before GotC got fixed). They're either downloading a specific card type (Jameson) or a specific card (Vash), and when they do download, almost always both players benefit. The only time when they're downloading for themselves, is with the Vintner, but even then, using the Vintner has a steep caveat.

So, in answer to the question "Why would TNG be any different?": Because TNG's downloading now (even with Jameson) isn't to the excessive levels of the Borg and Klingons of old.

Maybe the lessons were learnt, and that's why the downloading now it unique (typically on a unique personnel), nuanced, and mutually beneficial.

And maybe there are still more lessons to learn - perhaps it's time for GotC and Quint to be reevalutated, partially un-nerfed, and have some salve rubbed on their aching nuts?
