HumQ: Devouring a set

It's Wednesday! We're more than halfway through Since we are over the hump, let's look at a question!
If you've been to the front page recently, you know there's a new expansion coming out soon. I really can't say more, but since one s coming, I want to know how you get started with a new set upon release?
Do you go for the cards you can slip in to a deck real quick? Are you going for a new deck unlike anything you ever made? Do you find yourself going more for cards that have one or two slots or the major themes in the set? Do you wind up dismantling your new decks quickly?
I know each set is different and there are several factors involved, but have some trends started to develop?

I normally look for the stuff that inspires new decks first. I love coming up with a new idea and noodling with it until it works or doesn't. I have a folder somewhere with plenty of half-built decks based on hair-brained ideas. It's fun to combine two things that maybe weren't designed to work together or to find a way to bring a card from another sub-affiliation into an unrelated build. New sets always offer new connections to try.
After that, I gravitate to the things that make other decks better. Usually, my builds are so specific that new stuff, while interesting, doesn't fit perfectly, but I still put that thought in.
Other people's reactions come after that. Maybe someone will point out an option I hadn't thought of and that will get juices flowing, but I usually want to blaze my own trail, so I let other people do the leg work there and try out designs once they're tried and true.

Great question.
I start with stuff for decks I have right now that I still want to play.
Then I look at the things that are in decks I used to play a lot that might make them newly interesting or competitive.
I’m more likely to look at cards for affiliation themes that I have played than ones that I haven’t for the same affiliation. For instance I haven’t played Bajoran teachery decks but I do scan for the Bajoran integrity cards.
If there’s a new area of trek or a new theme being explored that’s next unless it’s not from episodes I like.
Mostly I learn about other cards from what other people play against me, or what I read in tournament reports.

I usually approach expansions for the viewpoint of what deck concepts I can make with the cards in that expansion. I try to cover each card in each expansion. Sometimes that does mean the concept count hits double-digits*, especially if there are certain cards which don't fit in the same deck as any others in the expansion. Then I prioritize actually creating the decks which interest me the most. Fortunately, we've had the opportunity to restart fairly regular local tournaments here, so I expect I'll get through several concepts for the upcoming expansion.
*Please note these concepts are not necessarily new concepts. I'm not necessarily building that many decks from scratch each expansion.

What achievements come with the set? I make decks to fulfill those and that's about it.
Michael,
down to 2 known decks for achievements

The two dilemma achievements are in the same deck (set 12/13)
The other is the DS9 achievement that I don't have which isn't publicly revealed but appears on my list.
Any others are not publicly known and do not appear on my achievement list.
