Putting this up now because I won't be around much next week...
Here's the Standings in the Championship Season Pickem so far:
Danny 1
Sykes 1
Here's your field for the 2021 World Championship as of today:
Michael Van Breemen 1994
Jared Hoffman 1830
Eric Robinett 1812
Justin Ford 1774
Casey Wickum 1764
Maggie Geppert 1730
Jeremy Benedict 1719
Daniel Matteson 1664
Matt S 1660
Tim Claypoole 1633
Amber Van Breemen 1614
Jason Beyer 1520
Sean O'Reilly 1520
Robin Honeycutt 1515
Tim Gerrard 1481
Same as before, pick a winner and a most improved rating, but this time you need to do it for both Day 1 AND Day 2 - so 4 picks total.
Day 1 is going to be wide open - with a field where half of the players will make the cutoff, a .500 day should get you through to day 2. That's a hard field to pick a winner in, but I'll go ahead and give the nod to MVB. He's the clear favorite in this field and has a track record of bringing the goods to the big dance.
As for most improved, I think it's too hard to go chalk when there's a wide array of ratings combined with a sky high K-value. It only takes one win against one of the top dogs by a lower rated player to take the day on ratings gain. As such, I'm reaching down into the pool and going with Tim Claypoole. Tim is an old Team Ohio player who definitely knows his way around high level play. Assuming he shakes off the rust, I can see him pulling more than a few upsets on the top half of the field, and would be very surprised if he didn't make the cut.
As for Day 2, this is a tough call. Whoever wins is most likely to gain the most ratings points, but with the Swiss format (instead of a bracket) being the choice, all of the finalists will get the same number of games so the ratings bonanza upset potential is definitely there. That said, I still think MVB is the guy to beat, so I'm going with him for the win. For most improved, I think Hometown Hero Casey Wickum makes enough of a splash to gain some ratings points even if he ends up falling to MVB in the course of day 2.
You have until Day 1 kicks off to make your picks.
What do you all think? Will it in fact be the MVB show? Or will the Hometown Heroes, The Florida Connection, or Team Ohio have something to say about that?
