Magic: The Gathering is the undisputed leader of the CCG industry. They divide things up into five colors. They can (and often do) intermingle but often come back to those five at the end of the day.

We'll look at them this week in terms of what they looks like in Second Edition. For today, we'll look at Red. Look at the poll below and tell us what is Red in Second Edition. More than likely there are a few different and equally viable responses but which most resembles Red? let us know and we'll keep this open for at least a week and allow revoting. Be sure to tell us why as well.

If you aren't familiar with Magic the Gathering (or drink that Kool-Aid as our Executive Director points out) here is a quick primer for reference.

Vicious, bloodthirsty fighters?

Gotta go with Klingons and Dominion here.

Thematically red represents aggression. But aggression is how you win Magic. Red’s strategy tends to do direct damage to the opponent. The closest corollary to life totals that Trek has is points. So perhaps the most red thing you can do is score lots of bonus points?

Yeah, part of what makes Magic concepts map poorly to Trek concepts is that an "aggressive" deck in Magic is more akin in goals and playstyle to a speed solver, but miles apart in theming. In Trek, "aggressive" decks are ones that battle, which is much more like Magic's control decks in how they approach the game. However, a Trek player who likes pacifist/isolationist/passive themes will drift to speed decks, but a Magic player who likes the same themes will drift towards control/blue decks.

It makes the process of recommending a deck for a Magic player who is trying Trek very difficult. You've got to not only figure out what what type of deck they like , but why they like it. And you still might give them a TOS speed deck, and then watch them try to milk every ounce of value out of the upgrades, and realize you got it wrong: they wanted a solver, but a more mid-rangey solver with a bunch of cool tools and mechanics.

Flavor:
Klingons, with a note to Kazon.

What is red about - flavor? Sure, there's fire. But red is about passion. Red is abut living for today. Red loves the concept of today is a good day to die.

The Dominon are not red in spirit, they are cold killers, led by fear or hate.

Mechanics: It's really hard to translate this one to STCCG, especially 2E. You'd want to be able to burn resources hard in favor of ending the game quickly. A speed solver with lots of low cost.
