The idea was that in Star Trek, they were in a post-gender-biased world. (Spock must have taken a class based on his behavior during TOS.) Male and female officers are both called "sir" too. It's a point in "Caretaker" that Janeway isn't fond of "sir" and prefers "ma'am," but only if things get dicey.

As I understand it, it was a Nicolas Meyer thing. Kind of the opposite of the pendulum swing now, where one's preferred pronouns are king (or queen). In STII, they eliminated the confusion by giving everyone "male" descriptors. Of course, it falls apart a little when characters still use actual pronouns as we do today like, "Is she wearing her hair differently?"

I'm probably not a good one to comment, but it does raise the question in my mind about which is the best way to eliminate the feelings of "otherness," making everyone "he/him/sir/Mr." or let everyone pick the monikers of their choice?

quick question.

What about the lore of this card?
"Sauce for the goose, Mr. Saavik. The odds will be even."

Saavik is female.

Did anyone call her 'Mr.' in the movie? o.O
Short answer is yes. That is absolutely a direct line from the movie.
