The hottest new game on the market is Lorcana. Based off Disney properties, this game is big out of the gate. There is huge demand, especially considering the game is not on the market. There are printable starters around the internets and everything.

One deckbuilding tool used is that you can have three copies of a card in your deck, not just what we would call the subtitle. Under these rules, you can have up to three copies of Jean-Luc Picard, Starship Captain and three copies of jean-Luc Picard, Principled Maverick, for example.

I will note that this is not on the table. In fact, I'm pretty sure this is at beast a bad idea. It is not a slam dunk, and could dilute your deck, but this can get a bit too chaotic real quick, and that is not taking into consideration the top players in the community.

This week, tell me what you would do if you could stick three copies of each card and not title in your deck. How far can you break this? Feel free to give the nightmare scenario to show us just how horrible this is. Presume that uniqueness still applies and if you have your Principled Maverick in play, you cannot play your Starship Captain at all.

(Nitpick, in Lorcana it’s style of 4, it 3, so you can have 4 of each I. Your deck.)

On first blush it’s not a bad idea, but the key issue is that cards were not designed with this in mind. There’s plenty where it wouldn’t matter, because the personas are so different they sever different deck building needs.

And at the same time, it wouldn’t fix the core mistake that Decioher made of making [AU] the same persona as the main crew. (The entire narrative point of the mirror universe is compare and contrast, and the rules prevent that.).

Also, unlike Lorcana and 1E, there’s no direct benefit to having multiples of the same persona, instead it’s a slight downside because of uniqueness.

I think you’d see a rise in capturing, since capturing a key person could turn lots of cards into dead weight.

Also 2E relies more on having a critical mass of people, so that’s a good argument against overloading too much.

The main benefit would be redundancy, so your probably want personas where the skills are very close between them. Actually figuring that out would take more work then I want to do on mobile.

So I’d guess the biggest winner would be a Bajoran solver with all the Kira’s, or a Fed strength deck with multiple Data’s.

Multidimensional Transporter Device would start seeing some play. Players could more easily take advantage of “when you play” effects before swapping to a version with better skills/attributes or in-play abilities.

We might also see an increase in use of personnel not intended to enter play. For example, I might include extra copies of Data or Lore in an Android deck to make it easier to keep three androids in hand.

I suppose somebody could get really cheesy and draw a ton of cards with Optimism.

Outside of those corner cases, I doubt much would change. Since you could still only have one version in play, most decks would likely only stock the version the builder felt was best for that deck. You don’t want to box yourself out of playing the best version of a personnel by having a lesser version already in play.

For those of us not quite picking it up, more words please?

A quick search of Kirk made me think of these two, who both have ways of dying/removing to overcome dilemmas, and having 6 of them in the deck might not be good. was there something else?

James T. Kirk, Living Legend
James T. Kirk, Original Thinker

(Not quite sure that works, as you can't play both to the same Earth, and can only have one earth, but I'm sure there's a way around that as well.)

You could combo it with Highly Decorated Captain to either get a 2-cost Kirk into play then MTD in a big dog version, or play him for 5 and download himself and a big dog to recur the party multiple times.
