Genesis once again rears its ugly head.

It was a fun set of premium cards, some of which are still key in the game today, but it had its issues. For one, the cards were all backwards compatible, which was a thing back in the day. For another it came out before the TOS faction was properly introduced yet it had cards from The Wrath of Khan. In order for them to be playable out of the gate, they had the TOS icon but also the Earth Icon, which caused trouble down the line.

While they are playable in TOS where they should be, they were also viable for Earth, which was troublesome. Additionally, they set a precedent that all cards made between that film and The Undiscovered Country, plus the prelude to Generations, would sport both icons. This was changed when Original Thinker Kirk got rid of Earth, among another adjustment, but more are coming. Earth and TOS will officially separate!

The question this week is who stands to lose more from this separation? A list of nouns that will most be effected can be found here, but what do we need to give one group to make up for this loss?

Was the draft open to everyone? Or was it a playtesting thing? I don't remember seeing it on the tournament page.

Also, how did Original Thinker "get rid of Earth?" I'm not familiar.

Original Thinker used to have the TOS [TOS] icon and the [E] icon so he could be played to the [DS9-E] HQ as well. Some people didn't like that so it got removed, unfortunately sounds like that's coming for the other cards with both icons as well.

Probably ES9 has the most to lose. I don't think their Paranoia game is that strong to begin with, but add to that the loss of the Faithless Protégée's limited recycling, the timely Paranoia self-destruction of Cartwright, and the non-unique likely 7 Strength S'rrel, and it's even weaker still.

And specifically this was done because Genesis released before These Are The Voyages brought us Earth, Lush and Beautiful Home, so it would have been difficult to play Kirk, Spock and Saavik, and thus also U.S.S. Enterprise, Earth's Savior, upon release.

Yup. Glad TPTB are reining in the menace to the meta game that is ES9...

Given that icons and timelines are both vague and flexible (as demonstrated by the U.S.S. Bozeman (from 2278) being [Pa] [TNG] and Valeris (from 2293) becoming [Pa] [TOS]) , I think an argument could be made to have this Valeris become [Pa] [E] (to continue her work with [DS9-E] Paranoia decks) and have a new [Pa] [TOS] Valeris be made.

Failing that, someone from Homefront, Paradise Lost, or Conspiracy who does a similar, but not identical job would be nice
