Not me. WotC has produced one broken card, one hideously powerful card, and one completely worthless card. Fool me once...twice...thrice... I don't have much faith another WotC would be any better. If there's going to be more "community involvement" in design, I'd rather see through another round of Make It So.

Another option would be a contest where prize is one person getting to design a card (like was given to Worlds winners in the past, or to the losing MiS team). But design by community polling = not good.

You've said it before, not everyone is meant to design. WOTC has not worked on any of the previous attempts and I'm not sure why I'd expect it to ever work.

There are other ways to involve the community as a whole, like how the 15th Anniversary Collection was handled.

I like the idea of community designed cards. It would be fun if a way could be found to make this work.

The problem with WotC rests in its premise, that everyone can participate. But not everyone should be participating in designing cards. I'd rather see any resources that might be put into running Will of the Collective put towards identifying promising designers in the community (not necessarily through MiS) and bringing them into Design.

I personally prefer Make It So to WotC - I think we get more out of it (both from the perspective of the community, and from Charlie's Benevolent Dictatorship *g*) than a straight up popularity contest.

I think if you heavily watched it...like

Design: Okay, we're making either A) new Mission Specialist or B) new Support Personnel

Community: Okay, we vote __

Design: Okay, now we know which kind of personnel we're making. Which affiliation do you want?

Community: We want ________ affiliation

Design: Which classification?

Design: Which one/two skills?

Etc, etc, etc.

Then the community can submit names and lore and the CC can select which one they like best.

There, that's it. That way we get to pick a new personnel, but keep it simple.

OR, give us say 8 choices to poll of card ideas that are floating around behind the scenes that would be really cool. Then we move to 4 and then final 2 to vote on.

I gotta second this. Once it was all said and done, I have to say that Make It So was a rewarding experience. Yes, it is frustrating at times, but I realize now that that comes with the territory of design. I would be more than willing to help run/host it if we did it again.

I too would like to hold/help out with the MiS if ever done again as I think I'm not eligible to attend it anyway.

I'm always on board for more MiS. (Although hopefully I won't also be working a set at the same time this go around. :) )

Both turned out great. What's the problem?

I'll just offer this:

The CC Volunteer pool has very limited design resources, as stated in multiple PORs. These scarce resources should be deployed a manner that achieves Design's objectives in the most efficient and effective way possible.

Based on the POR, the demand identified is for more design volunteers and for those new proteges to learn from the experienced designers so there are more competent people to handle the design workload.

The answer to whether or not another WotC is appropriate would depend on the question:

Would another WotC be the most efficient and effective known way to get more people engaged in the deisgn process to the point of being a design volunteer? If the answer is yes, then we should do it again. If not, then this becomes a 'nice to have' and should ONLY be pursued if there is sufficient bandwith to support the effort and there is a possibility for a value-added result.

I voted "Yes, if better regulated," partly because I've never seen one before, but agree that MiS is more fun and more efficient for finding good designers. (...perhaps even more importantly, MiS is better at screening out bad ones, such as myself.)

I do have one caveat: while WotC is structured in such a way that leads (perhaps inexorably) to cards that are way off the power curve, MiS is currently structured in a way that strongly encourages design conservatism; it harshly punishes risk-taking at all levels, even though the contributors and voters individually try not to. So neither program is quite ideal for screening designers.

I still chuckle about how a Magnetic Field Disruptions knock-off was the highest-rated card in the MiS 2.0 Final, and as I recall the second-highest-rated card (at least for Mark's team, maybe overall) was a personnel that just downloaded a card when he came into play.

I convinced Mark to put the first one in there to show that we were brave enough to put such a simple card in a set meant to show off what we could do.

Both these ideas have elements that interest me as[…]
