Greetings! I hope that the first part of 2019 has been treating you all well, and that you're ready for some First Edition news and project updates! If you're not a regular reader of the front page, you might not know that I've been writing a weekly column about 1E news and goings-on. The column posts every Wednesday and covers tournaments and 1E news from around the world. This regular column is meant to help fill the gaps between these larger status updates, and highlight good tidings from the world of 1E. I encourage you to check it out every Wednesday!

In the mean time, I don't want to keep you waiting any more so let's dive right into the March 2019 update on 1E projects. Let's start with the one I've been asked about more than any other:
The Cage
(Formerly known as Project Delenn)
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Delenn is the first expansion of Block 5, the TOS block, and focuses on [OS] [Fed].)
The Cage, as Project Delenn will be known, has been very close to done for months, but the last few adjustments are proving to be time consuming and difficult to lock in. While that does mean that The Cage will be arriving later in the year than we'd hoped, it also means you'll be getting the best possible version of the expansion. The core issue has to do with the final power level of the new [OS] cards in the expansion, and getting them dialed into the right levels. The new [Fed] [OS] cards were aiming for a level of power and simplicity that ranked a little ahead of [TNG], to give new and returning players an easier time using the new cards; however, it turns out that a few interactions were pushing them up to near [22] levels in power. After much discussion and deliberation, it was agreed that we don't want the power of some current [22] decks to be the new baseline, so adjustments had to be made. And those adjustments required a few other adjustments, and etc.

The long and short is that most of the volunteers working on The Cage are pretty happy with where the file has ended up. There are some testers concerns about gaps in the faction the design team is working to address with some final tweaks (and even a new card added just recently.) The team is working with the playtesters to find ways to make sure these cards will be fun, functional, and impactful upon release without contributing to escalating power creep over [22] decks. As I hope you can imagine, all of this requires a lot of time, energy, and balance - hence the delay.

Our goal is to have The Cage out before the end of Regional season, in late spring of 2019. That's a few months behind from our original target of early Spring. It's possible that we'll need to spend even more time with the file, but I am hopeful that as it stands, The Cage is going to be good to go in another revision or two. I will say that some production work has begun, with cards being proofread and art resources being gathered, so we're a little ahead of the game for The Cage's production.

One of the side effects of this work has been that we had to change up one of the signature cards - Preserver Obelisk. As this is going to be the release promo, the card had already been produced by Art but fortunately it had not been printed. The team was able to make the changes they needed to make, keeping the spirit of the card, and I'd like to share the finished alternate-image promo version of the card with you today:

[Door] Preserver Obelisk
Seed one on table in facility phase; if you have no personnel in play, you may download up to 2 different [OS] personnel who name in lore a planet you seeded. Score 5 points whenever such a personnel helps solve the planet mission they name. You may not seed Assign Mission Specialists. OR Plays to download such a personnel whom you do not have in play.
223 VP

Image

If you've followed this card since it was first spoiled, the biggest change here is that it ONLY works with [OS] personnel. Previously, you could only download [OS] personnel but any "native" would score the points. Now, due to the updated wording, only [OS] personnel can benefit from this card. Ultimately, the design team agreed with this decision because a) it let the wording be much clearer and cleaner, and b) making this an [OS] specific mechanic allows it to be a little more powerful. Wins all around. Enjoy this preview!

Since we're talking about the [OS] block, here are some updates on the other two projects in the block:
Project G'Kar
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Delenn is the second expansion of Block 5, the TOS block, and focuses on [OS] [Rom].)
Project G'Kar has been done with design for a few weeks, and is currently patiently waiting in the queue for The Cage to finish up before rolling out to testers. Paddy Tye [KazonPADD] and Niall Matthews [sexecutioner], the project co-lead designers, have been taking advantage of the time to polish their initial designs. Additionally, the team has been doing internal testing and following the testing of The Cage and the adjustments to the metagame due to recent errata; where it's been needed, they have been making tweaks. There are some really cool cards and mechanics in Project G'Kar, including [Rom] [OS] cards but going beyond as well. (I hope the Trelane-related card works out as well as I think it will!)

Project G'Kar should begin testing any week now, and will be released approximately four (4) months after The Cage comes out.
Project Londo
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Londo is the third expansion in the TOS block, and will feature [OS] [Kli] cards.)
James Monsebroten [Orbin] and his team have been hard at work, brainstorming ideas and fleshing out the themes they want to give to Original Series Klingons. There's a nice cycle of cards that was ultimately cut from The Cage with the intention that James would rescue them in Project Londo, so I'm glad to see them still in the file. Klingons are deserving of their own suite of cards, fully developing a faction that's only been half in the game since The Trouble With Tribbles.

They have several months before they will release their expansion to testers, so lots is going to change between now and then. But there is a talented team working on this file - aside from James, both Matthew Zinno [commdecker] and Michael Moskop [comicbookhero] are returning - while newcomer Daniel Matteson [OKCoyote] joins his first expansion. Stay tuned for more developments as we move through the block. You can expect this expansion to come out about eight (8) months after The Cage is released.
Project Keiko
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Keiko is a scripted learn-to-play experience for new players.)
While we've got one more round of testing the scripted game to go, we're actively working on finishing up the rest of the project around that scripted game. Early testing indicated that players wanted a guide to the different card types, and icon guide - these are a where a large part of the work is happening. We're also working on getting updated graphics for some of the cards used and fleshing out the next steps for players after they've gone through the walk through.

If you've volunteered to test out Project Keiko, please stay tuned. Once the first pass on this additional content is completed - in the next few weeks - we'll be getting this out for you to run through its paces. I'm hopeful, but not confident enough to promise, this will be out this summer in time for it to be used at GenCon, Continentals, and Worlds.[/quote]
Project Argentum
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Argentum is an project to celebrate the 25th anniversary of STCCG.)
Project Argentum is really four (4) different projects, all designed to celebrate the 25th birthday of the Star Trek: Customizable Card Game. The first part, that I've previously told you about, is a boutique expansion with a cool story theme. I don't want to spoil this just yet, but the idea is that each card in the finished product will share a specific trait; I'm confident it will be something you guys will really enjoy.

The other three parts of this project are three (3) different and special sets of promo cards. We're still nailing down exactly how we're going to make these available for you, but these are all meant to celebrate the birthday of our favorite game. The first set of promos will be alternate-image promos of famous cards from the early era of the game (the PAQ era - Premiere + Alternate Universe + Q Continuum) but with non-TNG stories. For example, now that Black Hole is off the ban list, we might make a Voyager version (even though Black Hole is technically out of the PAQ era, it's close enough).

The second set of promos will be the opposite - famous and/or popular cards from non-TNG source that are remade with TNG-based alternate images. Note that due to property logos being a playable characteristic, all of the cards in these two promos sets will be verbs, i.e. not personnel or ships. But, to make up for that, we're doing the third set of promos: a high resolution set of the main bridge crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation. You will finally be able to have and print out clean, crisp, high definition versions of the main TNG crew, all with alternate images from the HD Remastered versions of the show.

Excited yet? Stay tunes - we've got more tricks up our sleeves.
Project Babylon
STATUS: EXPLORATORY DESIGN
(Project Babylon is an exploratory design project looking at the problems with Nors, and potential solutions to those problems.)
This project, under the leadership of Paddy Tye [KazonPADD], is already underway studying the nuances of Nor use and their mechanics. A number of games have been played already to get a firm baseline established, and then the team will be leaving no stone unturned in their examination of ways to address "the Nor problems." That includes new cards, errata, rules changes, and even a new version of existing Nors that allows players to ignore all the extra baggage. A number of you have suggested "a way for you to play Nors the old way and me to use a simple version," and that's on the table as well.

Ultimately, the deliverable of this project isn't going to be an expansion or new cards, but data. We'll know, and have data to back up, how all of the potential changes might impact the game and the playability of Nor cards. We'll use this data, with your help, to chart a course forward for these beloved but very complicated cards. And, as I've said before, this data will let us look at projects like a revision of the DS9 block (much like Coming of Age did for the TNG block) and new DS9-themed expansions. As an experimental design project, there are no deadlines or expected delivery dates; instead, we'll keep you updated as it progresses.[/quote]

We've got a few expansions that are on hold, or that haven't had much progress. Here's a summary of where those project are:
Project En Garde
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project En Garde is a pair of balanced decks designed to give great games against each other, and fit into tournament play.)
With basically the entire team of this project also working on Project G'Kar, it's been put on the back burner. However, it's also an opportunity to combine the two projects and get two birds with one stone. The goal of En Gard, as always, is to give casual, newer, and returning players a pair of decks that will let them play fun, kitchen table games with their friends. And once they are comfortable, they can take them to a tournament and compete without getting obliterated. Right now, the plan is for these decks to be [TNG] [Fed] vs [TNG] [Car] with a "Chain of Command" theme.[/quote]
Project Warrior
STATUS: EXPLORATORY DESIGN
(Project Warrior is an exploratory design project looking for ways to do to ground combat what Tactics did for ship combat.)
Allen Gould [AllenGould] and Jon Carter [pfti] have both been quite busy with other projects, and since exploratory design projects are always the lowest priority, nothing much has happened with this project. However, at our most recent staff meeting, both volunteers reaffirmed their desire to work on this, so hopefully some movement will be happening soon.
Project Annika
STATUS: EXPLORATORY DESIGN
(Project Annika is an exploratory design project looking for ways to play Borg along with other affiliations.)
Though things have been slow, Andreas Rhinelander [Dukat] has agreed to take on the lead of this project to keep things moving. Andreas, Jorn, and the rest of the team will be working on this as they can and hopefully, someday in the not-too-distant future, give us some cool direction to take the Borg.

That's all for this update. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments, anything I can give you more information on, or just if there's something you'd like to see more (or less of) in future updates. I'll endeavor to update more often, instead of waiting for significant news to pop up. I've always thought an update of "things are the same as last time" isn't something you'd be interested in, but I don't know for sure - do you want more frequent updates, even if that means things don't change as much? Let me know, and most of all, expand your power in the universe.

Yeah, this is gonna be a fun one for ALL play levels. 99% that this should pass the testing phase unaltered, apart from a slight jig with the wording. So excited to see this one released.

Also, We're taking a shot at making our very first Artifact! With the story-centric design of myself and Paddy, combined with the outlandish crazy of Dan, with Charlie in the background being like 'wtf guys', anything can happen. Post your guesses here!

I just had a brain storm (or maybe fart, I'll let you guys decide). If any of the nor designers read this, what if you could play/seed a card onto your Nor that makes it work like a normal outpost, save for docking ships, then you play the sites under the said new card to get the bonuses. So you can dock ships there once you make the docking facilities available. Ops might still need to be required to seed there. Character would just be "on the nor" or maybe in ops by default. It would also open a door to another idea, sites for other facilities and also starships. Although, I think event cards or even doorways with a 'site' keyword added to the game text would work just fine. The sites wouldn't house characters, but act as starship/facility upgrades. Sites could add skills, enhance personnel on board, allow certain things to report aboard, etc. I know we have some cards that do those things, which means some of the site cards could download those older cards and maybe even offer an improvement as a bonus. I wouldn't mind giving Picard his office, Neelix his mess hall, Seven of Nine her Astrometrics lab, Phlox his animal farm sickbay, Kirk his personal quarters (never put a black light to this card!), and Guinan's Ten Forward Lounge. Maybe have a "Refit" side deck that lets your play a site from it once per turn on a ship/facility with 2 engineer on board, (one engineer if it's docked).

Wow, a lot of thought went in here, already!
It reminded me, in part, of some things that Dragoncymru was working on for solo play (further in the topic he links to his status updates), so maybe there's some additional inspiration to be found there, as well? (I don't remember the specifics, but I think he was devising a system for ship upgrades as well, with existing cards.)
If you don't mind, I'll drop a link to this on his topic, so your ideas might find some synergy resonance or something. 8)

I do wonder, though, if this would not make Nors too strong? And they're pretty fleshed out, ad complicated, already.

But I really like your idea of starship sites though! Docking bays / collars could have ships load & launch for free (and download Est Landing Protocols), and e.g. "Sickbay" or "Engineering" or "Computer Core / LCARS" could double their respective related skills of personnel present (or at that location? But perhaps only, if one/two such personnel remain on board to operate the facilities...) Just thinking out loud. :)

Well, we could take a page from the Decipher Star Wars CCG. They had starship sites. Characters on the Executor itself were considered to be on the bridge, but the starship sites represented 'below-decks' places like Vader's meditation room and stuff like that.

As far as project babylon goes, being one of the more aggressive Nor players, I would be happy with it as long as I'm able to keep the parts that make the nor's unique right now, if we can simplify it while keeping the pro's and con's for Nor's at a similiar level that would be ideal

It's been awhile since I've shared a status update with all of you, and it's time for me to correct that injustice. Since I last updated you in March, we've release The Cage to a very positive reception, and it's already made an impact on our competitive season. I'm excited to see how things continue to evolve in the post-Worlds time frame. I've also been regularly writing a column on the front page of the site each Wednesday, sharing more day-to-day information about the game. So if you're starved for news, check out the Weekly 1E Roundup each week.

But, as good as those columns are for highlighting who's playing what deck, they don't tell you much about expansions aside from release information. So without further delay, allow me to dive into the August 2019 project status update. Soon, you'll know where we are with our projects and what you can expect over the next few months.

2019
The Neutral Zone
(Formerly known as Project G'Kar)
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project G'Kar is the second expansion of Block 5, the TOS block, and focuses on [OS] [Rom].)
We've hinted at it, and it's been guessed by at least one member of the community, but today I'm happy to finally announce the name of Project G'Kar - The Neutral Zone. This expansion will be sixty-three (63) new cards, largely focused on the [Rom] [OS] faction, building on the themes set up by The Cage earlier this year.

Of all of the expansions I've seen tested, The Neutral Zone has had a reception near the top of that list. By and large, there have been no need for large changes and the testers have been happy with the content delivered by Paddy Tye (KazonPADD) and Niall Matthew (sexecutioner), the lead designers of the Project G'Kar team. They took full advantage of the delay in The Cage to deliver a solid, fun, and exciting expansion to testers. The testers, in turn, have focused on making the cards as fun as possible, focusing on tweaks because there weren't many potential problems. There are some really cool cards and mechanics in The Neutral Zone, and I can't wait for you all to see it.

The expansion as been in testing for a few months. Right now, the Creative and Rules Teams are applying their full focus to the cards; if all goes well, The Neutral Zone should be out in late fall or early winter, but definitely before the end of 2019.

One problem that we ran into during development of Project G'Kar was that it was too full of good stuff. The [Rom] [OS] content demanded a lot of focus, and it was threatening to push off a lot of really cool cards. So we decided to give you all a bonus, so allow me to announce the following:
Project Na'Toth
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Na'Toth is a spin-off of Project G'Kar, the second expansion of Block 5, featuring cards that otherwise would have been cut for space.)
Rather that cut a bunch of cards from Project G'Kar and save them for a rainy day, we decided to give you some bonus content. We found a subset of cards that went together nicely, and broke them off from the main project. We're going to play the content very close to the vest, but it's something we think you'll really enjoy.

We haven't decided if this is going to be a proper boutique expansion, or if we're going to make it something more like a "Warp Pack," but the content will be coming no matter what form it ends up taking.

Project Na'Toth will be coming to you a little bit before The Neutral Zone, so you'll have that to look forward to later this year.
Project Argentum
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Argentum is an project to celebrate the 25th anniversary of STCCG.)
Project Argentum has been testing alongside Project G'Kar, but has taken a bit of a back seat to make sure that The Neutral Zone (and the newly announced Project Na'Toth) are finished up. But this small, boutique-style expansion is marching along for a release this November, to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

We've decided to do a top-down (i.e. story based) theme for this project: cards based on episode titles. We found some of our favorite episode titles from Star Trek, The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, and Enterprise, and built cards to capture those stories. Admittedly, it's an odd theme for an anniversary project, but we wanted to do something different after the last few similar projects.

To go along side these new cards, there will be two (2) different sets of promos available in tournament kits and via other various means through the site.

2020
Project Keiko
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Keiko is a scripted learn-to-play experience for new players.)
Project Keiko, the learn to play experience, is still being worked on. We'll be announcing more details soon, with an eye for getting this out in the early part of 2020 (if not sooner).

Project Londo
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Londo is the third expansion in the TOS block, and will feature [OS] [Kli] cards.)
In the past few months, I've seed James Monsebroten [Orbin] and his team put a ton of cool stuff into their design file. Not only have they been hard at work, brainstorming ideas and fleshing out the themes they want to give to Original Series Klingons, but they're exploring some cool new content to deliver on themes set up by The Cage and The Neutral Zone.

Once Project Argentum has finished testing and moved onto production, this expansion will be releasing to testers - so only a few weeks or months to go. Aside from James, the talented team consists of both Matthew Zinno (commdecker) and Michael Moskop (comicbookhero) returning, while newcomer Daniel Matteson (OKCoyote) joins his first full-sized expansion. It's likely Project Londo will be releasing in Spring of 2020.
ANNOUNCING: Project Storm
STATUS: PRE-DESIGN > DESIGN > DEVELOPMENT > PRODUCTION
(Project Storm is a stand alone expansion based on the end of the Dominion War.)

Earlier this year, I gave all of our staff members the chance to vote on a boutique expansion that we'd put into development. The winner of that vote was an expansion based on the end of the Dominion War; in particular, the ten (10) episode arc that ended Deep Space 9. We decided it was a big enough project to expand into a full-sized expansion, so that's how Project Storm was born.

I'm thrilled to announce this project will also feature the return of Cristoffer Wiker (Smiley) to the volunteer corps of First Edition. Cristoffer will be taking the lead on this expansion, and has some great ideas for how to build this project.

The plan is to release this after the [OS] block is complete, so likely in the Summer of 2020. We'll keep you informed as this project develops.

OTHER PROJECTS

Project Babylon
STATUS: EXPLORATORY DESIGN
(Project Babylon is an exploratory design project looking at the problems with Nors, and potential solutions to those problems.)

This project, under the leadership of Paddy Tye [KazonPADD], is already underway studying the nuances of Nor use and their mechanics. They've got quite a few ideas, and we're in the process of deciding how best to deliver on this projects goals. Do we do it in phases, releasing things we're confident in now even though they change the environment? Or wait until the final report is complete? We'll keep you informed on the debate, and if you have a strong opinion, please let us know.

Our goal is to return this project to the forefront after The Neutral Zone is complete, with the plan for these decks to be [TNG] [Fed] vs [TNG] [Car] with a "Chain of Command" theme.

STATUS: EXPLORATORY DESIGN

Allen Gould [AllenGould] and Jon Carter [pfti] have both been quite busy with other projects, and since exploratory design projects are always the lowest priority, nothing much has happened with this project. Very nice! Thanks for the update.

Since the newly announced Project Storm will be a full-size expansion, can you give a bit more insight on what kind of impact this will have on the TMP-Block (which was supposed to be the next block after TOS as far as I remember)? Regarding the schedule or block design in general for example.

Fun fact: Our very first design post for The Neutral Zone was March 2017. So from a testing perspective, it looks like 2+ years of non-stop work has (hopefully) paid off.

I have a big survey full of data to go through before I made any decisions, but the idea behind putting Project Storm between blocks was to be a spacer. It's not meant to replace the TMP block, but just consider it a non-block palate cleanser expansion. I'm pretty confident we'll still be delivering some form of TMP block content, even if it changes from the planned 3-expansion model.

It's hard to balance the size of the expansions with how much gap you want to leave between.

If you give players too little you risk them drifting off quickly if you give too much the development cycle is too long. I think the current plan looks really good I mean can't argue about getting a new set soon 8)

Thanks to all the designers for putting in lots of work into getting the players some new cards.

I have pages and pages of ideas (and cards in various degree of completion) but I'll wait to see what the rest of the design team will bring. It's going to be fun working on this game again.
