I actually quite like that as a legitimate possibility. Yes it's a bit of a pun, but it also fits with the lore and rather reflects the way that the relationship with the Excalbians may well be in the TNG period, given Kirk and Crew didn't exactly part with them on the greatest of terms. (Well the Excalbians probably weren't fussed, but the crew of the Enterprise weren't exactly happy at being used as pawns in someone else's entertainment.)
