Hey guys, haven't played in a long time and just getting back into the swing of things here. I always had a bit of an issue with play restrictions and I want to make sure I am understanding this correctly. Please excuse my terminology if it is not right.

Aside from [1E-DQ] , [1E-GQ] , and [MQ] quadrant guys having to deploy to their respective quadrants, and the [1E-AU] symbol guys needing an appropriate doorway, is there anything else I need to be concerned with?

Also, are symbols like [EE] , [TE] , [OS] , and [KCA] only for staffing ship purposes?

Also, what do [Bar] , [KW] , and [Maq] do in 1E?

I am aware of the restrictions for [Holo] .

Thanks!

All of the symbols you're asking about are considered "unloaded" and interact with cards per various gametext. Staffing ships is one such interaction, but there's more. A LOT more.

I'd recommend perusing through some of the newer cards and go from there. You'll see what I mean.

Good luck, and welcome back! :cheersL:

I don't understand your first sentence use of "unloaded", but the icon legend in the rulebook is pretty useful for that stuff I think.

I guess in my mind, I am trying to draw a distinction between things which determine where and if/how something can even enter play: Quadrant symbols and [1E-AU] . I guess my question is what else can affect, or do I need to consider to even just put something into play (aside from affiliation restrictions, of course)?

As opposed to something which is just for referencing something in play like a staffing symbol.

Also what is that symbol below the [1E-AU] symbol on the U.S.S. Pasteur?

Hello and welcome back!

"Loaded" and "unloaded" icons are player jargon (not actually game terms). A "loaded" icon is an icon that has built-in rules of some sort (like the [1E-AU] icon). An "unloaded" icon is an icon that does not have any built-in rules, but which gets referenced by other cards (like the [Rule] icon).

You're asking specifically about restrictions on cards when they enter play, and I think you've pretty much covered those:

[1E-AU] means the card is Restricted and you need either: (a) another card specifically granting them permission to enter play (such as Alternate Universe Door or Sigmund Freud), or (b) you need to play them at a Time Location where they are native. For example, Ensign Chekov may report for duty at Sherman's Peak, even without an [1E-AU]-enabling card on the table.

[GQ] , [DQ] , [MQ] , and [AQ] all have to enter play in their respective quadrants.

Faction and era icons, like [Maq] , [CF] , and [22] , are unloaded. Lots of cards are interested in them, like They Call Themselves The Maquis, but there are no special rules around them.

The only other symbols I can think of that might raise questions when entering play are [Holo] , [HA] , and Universal / Enigma icons. You can find the relevant rules for all of them in the Rulebook.
Also what is that symbol below the [1E-AU] symbol on the U.S.S. Pasteur?
That's a Nemesis Icon. These matter very, very, very rarely, but there are some rules that go with them: https://www.trekcc.org/op/1e_rulebook/#NEMESIS

Thank you for explaining loaded vs unloaded.

Yeah I just want to make sure I am not putting something into play which is not permitted so that I can actually build a deck.

Here's an important concept about quadrant icons (i.e. [1E-DQ] ). They only matter if you are reporting the personnel to a facility or a time location using the normal (rulebook) reporting function or "special reporting" printed on a facility or site card, such as the reporting function printed on Ops.

Any other reporting such as cards saying "Report to a planet.", "Report to a ship", "May report anywhere" all ignore quadrant icons when reporting. This includes popular cards like Assign Mission Specialist or Assign Support Personnel.

Also when a ship "reports with crew", the crew can be from any quadrant but one must still be a "matching"(Same affiliation) personnel.

Thank you very useful to know.

But don't all personnel need to match affiliation in order to work together? Can non-affiliated crew still board ships that do not match their affiliations without special cards?

Well those personnel have to work together, so [Fed] + [NA] + can work together without a treaty or similar.
