Good day, all,

Yesterday it was announced that Strange New Worlds was renewed for a 5th and final season. That means that, including the upcoming 3rd season, there are 26 episodes of the show remaining. What are you hoping to see before this wonderful show goes off the air?

Have a great weekend!

A fulfilling and interesting story arc that lands near the start of the TOS era - Pike handing off command to Kirk, the cast getting a curtain call, etc.

I know the consequences of timeline disruption were made clear in the S1 finale, but testing Pike's resolve on that front with consequential interim moments and decisions could qualify as interesting if done right.

We know where he ends up, he knows where he ends up and there's no getting around it, but HOW he gets there, and the things he does along the way, are what makes for some really good potential stories.

Also, they need to explain how the fuck the Gorn are unknown in TOS given there's a fucking war with them happening in SNW, but NeuTrek RetCons of OG Trek story points are par for the course, so I'm not getting my hopes up too far on that front...

What I’d like to see is a smooth landing. Everything flowing into place and perfectly aligned to deliver the start of TOS. Not the dodgy jumpers, but everything in place and reasonably explained.

“Clearly shows” is making some BIG assumptions here. For example, just because Emporer Georgiou exists in the Mirror Universe does not mean Philippa Georgiou doesn’t exist in the prime universe.

What this really means is that NuTrek haters are clutching desperately at straws to rewrite history as they’d like it. Lot of that going around unfortunately….

Chekov on the Enterprise. This will create on-screen proof that he was there for season 1 of TOS but was not yet a Bridge Officer; so that is why Khan remembered him in ST 2 even though Khan's TOS episode was season 1 before the Chekov character was even on the show, lol.

A common myth about Star Trek is that Khan recognizing Chekov in the film is a continuity error because "Space Seed", with the villain, was broadcast before Koenig's casting. Adaptations: From Text to Screen, Screen to Text calls this "the apparent gaffe notorious throughout Star Trek fandom". Although Chekov does not appear in "Space Seed", "Catspaw"—with the character—has an earlier stardate. Koenig joked that Khan remembers Chekov from the episode after he takes too long in a restroom Khan wants to use.

Sure. Philipa might exist in Prime universe. And sice it seems many if not all central characters exist in pretty much any alternate universe we've ever seen, it seems quite likely. The argument concerns Klingons though. There were TOS klingons and their apparent change was explained in ENT. How does DISO Klingons fit it? Lower Decks provides nice explanation that actually allows everyone to be happy. ENT-TOS-TNG-DS9-VOY-LD-Prodigy-PIC timeline is not disrupted, and DISCO-SNW-SFA might work quite nice in the own niche. No one has to hate anyone and we can all be merry without trying to explain unexplainable changes here and there. What is wrong with that?

* A "Kir'Shara"-style arc to both explain how the Gorn of SNW became the Gorn of TOS and to humanize them. I am really unhappy with how SNW has taken the main message of "Arena" (these lizards that seem like monsters are actually a great deal like you and act from perfectly rational motives) and turned it on its head (these lizards are MONSTERS! KILL THEM!). However, I was also unhappy with ENT Vulcans and "Kir'Shara" really brilliantly fixed that, so there's hope.

* Something similar for Spock. I cannot currently reconcile SNW!Spock with TOS!Spock. They do not appear to be the same characters. They do not appear to be trying to be. Ditto Chapel, come to think of it.

* Not a single additional legacy character. Write out Jim Kirk while we're at it. (I'll allow Sam Kirk because he barely counts as legacy.) I'm watching for new Star Trek episodic adventures, not memberberries.

* New ideas! The best episode of Season 2, hands down, was "Among the Lotus Eaters," because, whatever its flaws, it was nobody's retread.

* One or two more "format-breakers" like "Subspace Rhapsody." You don't want that every week or it turns into Saints Row 4, but a bold experiment is welcome even if it fails.

* Captain Pike informing Spock that "Beets are a very misunderstood vegetable."

I don't mind the SNW character's behavior. It's just that she isn't Nurse Chapel. She behaves nothing like Nurse Chapel. She's a new original character.

Now, I'm all for O.C.'s (see the rest of my post), but it's grating and distracting to try to smuggle a brand-new character in under an old character's name. If you want Nurse Chapel, you gotta have Nurse Chapel, cringe and all. (And I think it's perfectly defensible to say, "Well, in that case, then I don't want Nurse Chapel." Great! Legacy characters are a crutch!)

I just remind myself that SNW isn't a prequel, it's a Sequel to ENT, which is a sequel to First Contact. Production order is timeline order thanks to all the time travel. ;)

That's just a bunch of headcanon retcon bullshit.

The real answer is Walter Koenig was so excited about having something to do in TWOK that he immediately caught the continuity error and SHUT THE HELL UP ABOUT IT for fear of them "correcting" the error by giving the TWOK Chekov part to Sulu, which I'm sure George Takei would've LOVED since he always wanted Sulu to do more.*

Smart.

*In his autobiography To the Stars, Takei lamented his agreeing to do Star Trek V and didn't want to return for Star Trek VI. The thing that brought him around was the first page of the script that opened with CAPTAIN SULU, USS EXCELSIOR...
