So if I seed Preserver Obelisk and DL my 2 [OS] personnel, and subsequently seed Continuing Mission, would CM be immediately discarded, or does the 'play' clause only count during the game since the 2 [OS] are not played, they are basically seeded? I guess the same would be true for Assign Mission Specialist if they are not [1E-TNG].

Download = play, so yes it would discard CM.

So if I seed CM first then it's DL, then later seed PO and it's 2 [OS], CM is discarded but my CM DL is already on the table so I am good?

CM says play or have played, so if you have downloaded 2 [OS] with obelisk, you "have played" a non- [1E-TNG] card so CM still goes splat.

But yes the [WC] card stays in play because nothing says to discard it (though with only a few exceptions they won't work well since they reference [1E-TNG] cards and you won't have any of those with CM gone).

I can think of 2 occasions where I want CM to DL something, and then no longer care about it after that. One is to play Followers of the One in my [AQ] [Hir] deck, and the other is like what I am doing in my deck for this month's Dojo Tournament so I can't say at this time.

Yes, some of the [WC] engines weren't prohibited by [1E-TNG] so have at it!

Though to be fair, when you play CM at anytime, it's going to download the [WC] card first, since the text for discarding it comes at the end. So you can play it in whatever order you want. It will still download a [WC] card.

This is wrong on at least one, maybe 2 levels.

1.) CM doesn't play, it only seeds, so once it's gone you can't get another one into play.

2.) I'm not sure the statement about getting the download first holds up. I seem to remember a ruling related to They Will be Coming that said if you commanded a non-alpha mission, TWBC self destructed before you got the Borg Cube download. So if that's true, then you'd want to seed CM, get your [WC] card, THEN seed Obelisk and download 2 [OS] people (and pop CM).

At least, that's how I'd do it.

That's right. I don't remember the specific discussion around TWBC you mentioned, but (just like with dilemmas) nullifiers are checked immediately when the card is played, before it's able to have any effects (and then again after each subsequent action).

Only way around CM is persona swapping or seeding I believe

Well that's not how a card game should work, but okay.....

How do you mean? There have always been cards in 1E with conditions placed upon them before they can enter play (going back to Supernova). "Nullified if..." is simple one way of expressing that -- rather economically.

I agree there's plenty of issues in 1E rules, but I've never perceived this as one of them. Indeed, it's one of the frustratingly rare cases where a words means the same thing in the same way in two rather different contexts.

But that's why I ask, so I can understand your quite different reaction.

Different wordings. TWBC is nullified, CM is discarded. Nullifies prevents the card from doing anything at all, while discard happens after.

Is there a glossary entry for parsing "discarded"?

I... would tend to agree with this reading. If the card gave a condition for nullification, sure, it never has an effect. But if a card says it gets discarded... well, that leads me to believe it hasn't been nullified, simply that its effect comes to an end.

I should perhaps clarify that my comment above related to TWBC and "nullifiers". I honestly haven't even looked at CM during this discussion and have no opinion on the timing of its discard.

With that in mind, carry on.
