Potentially dumb question...

If a unique personnel is killed or ship destroyed, can I play a new copy/persona of that personnel/ship, or is that persona considered "dead" for the rest of the game?

I checked through the glossary and I don't see any restrictions like that.

you can play a new copy. the rules only prohibit you from having more than one in play

You can prevent someone from coming back by playing a Klingon Painstik, though!

I think the game's theory is that unique personnel who die and then get replayed didn't REALLY die! They escaped because of clones or time travel or they faked their own death or something. But a Painstik proves that it was definitely you and you are definitely dead, and so you stay dead forever.

Agonizing that I'm going to have to wait until Sunday for the answer.

IIRC, you kill your own Brunt turn 1 then Painstik him so your opponent can’t play their Brunt and Writ you. Then Q Bypass to your heart’s content.

This is essentially correct. The trick was getting everything seeded correctly and out on turn 1.

This was summer 2001, so post-Voyager, pre-The Borg? I think?

Key missions: Wormhole Negotiations and Reported Activity, 4 missions with [NA]

Key seeds: Q x2, Magic Carpet Ride OCD, Husnock Outpost (seeded next to Wormhole Negotiations, Husnock Ship, The Art of Diplomacy x2, Writ of Accountability
Temporal Micro Wormhole x2
Mission Specialists: Kahless and Korris (10+8)

Assign Support Personnel target: Amaros (6), [Maq]

Defend Homeworld target: Anya, [DL] Salia (9+8)

Card Play: Tumek, [DL] Grilka (8+8)

TMW download: Dr. Telek R'mor (7) - reported to ship, discard TMW #1

Flip Writ, download Brunt, report to ship, discard TMW #2

Flip AoD #1, discard to download Klingon Disruptor

Flip AoD #2, place OOP to have Amaros kill Brunt.

Play Klingon Painstik targeting Brunt.

Put everybody on ship, fly to Wormhole Negotiations, attempt, hit Q, discard all dilemmas, solve for 55, get OCD, relocate to Reported Activity, beam down, attempt, Q Bypass, solve for 45, game.

It was a total rocket ship cheeseball deck, but when it went off it was glorious.

Breathtaking, you monster. Nicely done.

What if they just had a nice seeded Q the Ref? Did you then die?

Nope. I actually played a guy who was locked and loaded for cheese, and since I went first he didn't have an opportunity to download Brunt on my turn before the rocket went off. He just watched me doing all my stuff and when I stuck Brunt he was like "wait... what?!" and after I won he just sat there staring at the table shaking his head. He complimented me on my utter mastery of Q-Bypass.

I actually only finished 6th in that event though. I had 4 100-0 victories, and 2 0-100 losses for a final score of 8(+200). The second loss is lost to history, but I very distinctly remember the first loss. It was against Pat Bortz, who, when I revealed the first Q, promptly played a Q2 from his opening hand!!, nuking my Q. One plague ship combo later all of my dudes are in the discard pile and he meandered his way through 3 missions for a very standard win while I tried to pick up the pieces. Wasn't expecting the Q2 from hand... that was well-played by Pat.
