why? it doesnt say so. it only explicity says discard three cards from hand (or discard one [1E-AU] card from??)

as its currently worded you can (must?)(definitely discard a card in play. / you might even be able to discard an card from the opponents table

I'm not going to try to defend late Decipher era syntax - it's almost as bad as PAQ wording - but usually if you're discarding something from anywhere besides hand, it specifically says so.

I want to point out, that the glossary doesnt say discard defaults to hand discard. So this is more of a "we always played it that way" rule. Dilemma also dont refer to itself or table or seed. Meaning you could discard any dilemma from hand if an encoutered one asks for it.

glossary under "discarding"

When a mission allows or requires you to discard a card as part of its requirements, or for extra points, that card must come from the crew or Away Team attempting the mission, not from your hand, at the time the mission is solved. All other discards (e.g., for Static Warp Bubble) come from the hand unless otherwise specified.

Correct.

Ensign Q makes a good point that this rule is bizarrely obscure. We all play it that way out of habit, but it's not easy for somebody to intuit or find. *makes a note of it*
