Pretty much this. Many players like to create a curated list of one of each of the most powerful cards they own. It makes drafting more exciting - what do you draft when all your choices are awesome?

Some cube builders settle on 360 cards as a good total cube size, as that is the number of cards that get drafted with eight players. Others like a higher number for a little variety.

I missed picking that up back in the day.

Also, on the "cube" front - while "here's all the super powerful stuff" is a common theme for cubes, pretty much any bunch of cards will work. (I think the "strictly worse" cube - where every card has a better version that's *not* present - is my favorite theme to date.)

Yeah I've considered "alternate" style cubes in the past as thought experiments - such as the "commons only" cube, or the "low rated cards only" cube.

Do you have a list at hand?

Free to play does not mean entirely free ... how do they make money?

You can buy packs and such (and you'd probably have to if you were serious about rankings and such), but if you just like playing game and won't stress that you're not playing the current Acceptabled Friday Night Magic Standard? No money required.
