This one might be useful for Porthos, should we someday be able to translate Dog to German.

I asked my dog how life was going.

He replied "Rough!"

What's the difference between "brauche" and "benötige"? (Honest question.)
Hmmmm, there may be some subtlety there we need a native speaker to explain. Google Translate is just saying need for each of them.

@monty42? Kannst du uns helfen?

It is a bit about the level of need/importancy ... "brauche" is more like "i need you!", "I need a beer". "Benötige" is best likened to "require", like "I require some more salt". However, "brauche" is more or less the go-to in most situations nowadays, same as with "need" in English.

Danke sehr für ihre reaktion. Dass wüsste ich noch nicht -- weil dass unterschied eigentlich einfach ist wenn mann die beide Englische wörter kennt. Ich benütze die beide oft, und "brauche" auch (wenn ich in der position bin, etwas Deutsch zu reden); aber "benötige" habe ich, denke ich, noch niemahls gesagt oder geschrieben... Wieder etwas gelernt. 8)

Thank you very much for your reaction. I don't know that yet - because the difference is actually easy if you know both English words. I use both of them often, and also "need" (when I'm in a position to speak some German); but I don't think I have ever said or written "need" ... Learned something again.
Hmm. With "weil", I wanted to say something like "although". Should've used "aber"...? (Oh, I'll never be able to render German properly.)

Well, "benötige" is more of "upper German" (both from a level of class as well as geographically) and hardly used in everyday life. I come from Bavaria and I do not think there is a version of "benötige" in the Bavarian vocabulary.

At least we have some state identity and culture which is not simply based on being a transit bottleneck!

Is this an idiom or are we talking gingerbread houses?

Lebkuchen! Bitte!! :D

We have that here only around weinachten*. :(

(Hmpf, we were going to translate everything, eh?
*: xmas.)

It's a (specific) sort of gingerbread (we have our own, various sorts; aber lebkuchen ist könig**).

(**: but "lebkuchen" is Koenig.)
(You know who Koenig is, I hope!?) :lol:
