The literal translation is hitting the money on the head.
It stems from the middle ages where a coin always had a head on one side. When somebody paid for a round of drinks at an Inn, he slammed the coin on the table (he hit the money on the head)

Today it's mostly an expression for spending a lot of money for something trivial.

That's a bit of a creepy coincidence; not 10 minuted ago, I watched part of The Shining.
That I don't understand the connection between this image and the duolingo thread, makes it even creepier.

If you're talking about my image, that's inspired by the movie Manos: The Hands of Fate, which is infamous for being one of (if not the) worst movies ever done on MST3K. I was going off the "Master" thing there.

In particular, this image is from the PC game inspired by the movie.
