Oh no, you paid for it. Trust me. You had to buy a meal plan if you lived in the dorms.

Yes, they charged a lot for the meal plan. If you lived on campus, you had to get one that covered a certain number of meals... just once you were in there, it didn't matter how much you took though, as my college was the buffet-style as well.

In that way, I was lucky to have gone to the U.S. Air Force Academy out of high school. Breakfast and lunch was mandatory and 4000 cadets were all served in 20 minutes (served, ate, and left). We formed up and marched across the Terrazzo (central paved square of the campus) to those meals. Dinner was usually buffet, but most learned quickly to take the food back to the dorms, so no going back. We did make fun of the food, but it had a nice variety. Chicken cordon bleu was a favorite (we called them "hamsters"). It was a high calorie diet, but physical activity was still a requirement. At the same time, we did have our version of the Freshman 15, which we called Terrazzo Butt (no need to convert to metric on that one).

Once I started at Iowa State, I ballooned up. I was older than the average freshman, so based on my own private case study, the weight gain was definitely about the lack of structure and having to create your own discipline.

For the dorm I was in (Lister Hall, U Alberta), you had to buy a meal plan, but you basically got a debit card to spend at the cafeteria.

The upside was that you could eat at any of the campus cafeterias run by that company, which meant you could get Pizza Hut, and you weren't tied to the dorm. (There was a really good soup-and-sandwhich shop that overlooked the river valley that I discovered *far* too late in my uni life.)

The downside was that since you were just pre-buying food on campus, it was a very expensive way to live, and they did not do a good job telling first-years that you were *not* going to live on $7 a day. It was common for folks to run out of cash with months of term left.

Thanks for those stories. After I left home I lived in digs (a decrepit old house with 3 student rooms rented out, and shared facilities). I lived near the centre of town (walking distance).
From the get-go, I just bought my food in the supermarket or wherever else. There were/are student dining halls, but I never made use of those, really.
So, interesting to hear your experiences.

Did your campus caterers provide bagles and cream cheese, though?

Definitely bagels, and I suspect cream cheese was available. But back then I was firmly on Team Breakfast Bagel - fried egg, piece of ham, slice of tomato.. was $3.50 and if you were lucky would keep you full through lunch.

Bagels are just week old donuts.

Change my mind.

Why would I do that? This way there's more bagels for me!

No(t yet). Their Great Southern Trendkill, however, is a classic.

I prefer their Asiago bagels. As a savory option, they counter the old donut argument. Also, Panera will forever be The St. Louis Bread Co. to me. :shifty:

Finally, for those who may be confused:

Oh. Not Pantera. I must've misread... :innocent:

Must've been wishful confusion? :metal: 8) :metal:

Do you, then, also have a food delivery service called, "Meallica"? :shifty:
