Hello everyone. I have some information about errata in July and August I'd like to share with you. We'll be posting an article on the front page about this as well, but I wanted to give as much notice as possible to everyone likely to be impacted.

Our standard game change policy guarantees no changes to rules, errata, or bans 14 days before a big event. However, because this year's schedule is a little bit off from normal, we're facing 3 consecutive months without any changes. We could use emergency errata to make changes, but that is against the spirit of the emergency contingency.

Instead, we are going to go ahead and issue errata during July at the usual time, Monday, July 3rd. This will be 11 days before the North American Continentals, 3 days short of our fortnight blackout goal. However, this will ensure that both NACC and EUCC are played under the same rules and we get these changes in before these major events.

To compensate for the shorter notice period, we're giving you extra notice today of what cards will be changing. Please keep in mind there is a possibility these changes may not happen if we run into production issues. But we can promise you that nothing else will be added, barring an emergency.

Here is the list of changes from the Balance Team:
  • [1E-Evt] Genetronic Replicator (Removed from Modern Ban List w/Errata)
  • [Inc] Battle Stations: Sovereign Class (Errata)
  • [Inc] He Took Away My Pain! (Errata)
  • [1E-Int] Double Dumbass on You! (Removed from Modern Ban List w/Errata)
  • [1E-Int] Palor Toff - Alien Trader (Removed from Modern Ban List w/Errata)
Also on July 3rd, there will be a change from the Rules Team to Rule 2.1 Missions that clarifies the meaning of the "fat" and "skinny" attemptability icons. This is not a major rules change, but will instead clarify some ambiguities.

For August, there will be no game changes during the standard window on August 7th. However, we are reserving a special errata window for the following week, Monday, August 14th. This will give us the opportunity to issue any changes needed after both Continentals and 1 month before the World Championships.

Again, we apologize for the changes. There will be an article confirming all of these changes on our front page in the next few days. Please let us know if you have any questions and we'll do our best to answer them.

Thank you,
-crp

as someone who is planning on continentals, 10/10, happy with the communication.

As long as I don't have to borrow the printer at the hotel for the event, I'm happy. And even then, if it had a printer I'd live with it.

Indeed. I'm also looking forward to seeing some of these cards see the light of day again. I'm also super excited about some of the stuff that's still in the pipeline that won't be ready for July 1.

Cracking the code on balancing some of these cards isn't easy, but when one lands, the feeling is immensely satisfying. Hopefully you'll be happy with the errata.

I have a odd feeling that the palor toff and double dumbass errata will either baller AF or a total garbage can and nowhere in between.

It is ever thus.

Even at the best of times, the habitable zone between "binder fodder" and "OP" is narrower than the Death Star trench.

And a card only goes to Balance at all if it egregiously crashed into the "OP" side like Porkins right after he says he's alright the first time Design tried it. They get the tough cases only -- and are way more constrained than Design is, because they can't cut it or fundamentally redesign it.

Maybe Balance should have the ability to send it back to design for reworking and reprint in a later set, which would then update the existing version and bring it back out of banned status.

This happens! Invasive Beam-In, for example, was a Design-driven erratum. So, yeah, it's a good idea!

But whoever manages these errata, it's going to be really constrained, because, ultimately, you have to capture the original spirit of the card. If you miss that mark, even in the name of better balance, you've erased the original card from the game just as surely as if it were banned, and that ruffles a lot of feathers. For example, there were several attempts at giving Horga'hn errata that tried to change it to a card that boosted romantic couples. These were unpopular with a number of people, because they seemed to lose the thrill of playing Horga'hn, specifically.

So Balance errata is just really hard to do, and always will be. I take my cap off to our Balance team for working as hard as they do to get it right instead of getting it quick (even though it's STILL quite hard to get it right, which is how this whole sub-thread got started :) ).

Invasive Beam-In was collaborative. Design wanted the matching (to stop Khan using it) and Balance wanted the countdown.
