Here's my current interpretation of Geordi and the rules around skills:

When at [1E-S], Geordi has 5 Skills.
[SD] Special Skill
[SD] Special Skill
• Navigation
• Astrophysics
• Stellar Cartography

I think that the special skills are themselves not the regular skills. I think that the special skills are actually a shorthand for "gains X". So each of the skills listed is then added to Geordi's skills at the end, much the same way ENGINEER is added by Engineering Kit.

Is this correct?

If it is correct, and Crippling Injury is placed on him, he would have 2 Special Skills, but no usable skills, right? Because CI would blank his 3 gained regular skills?

I don't think that's right. Geordi has two skills, both of which are special skills. Those special skills don't say he *gains* those skills, so I don't believe they get tacked onto the end like if you gain skills from an equipment card. (I'm totally open to being wrong about this. I have not searched the rulebook for this yet.)

So, if he goes *beepbeep* from Crippling Injury, he still retains Navigation, Astrophysics and Stellar Cartography in space and ENGINEER, Physics and Computer Skill on a planet.

So, how many skills does Geordi have at [1E-S] ? And what are they?

It is true that Geordi has 2 [SD].

It does not follow that he has 2 skills.

This makes more sense than whatever @JeBuS was saying.

This is possibly a silly question, but why do we care how many skills he has?

There are cards that are about listed-skill order. There are cards that care about number of [SD] . Which cards care about skill count, AMS/ASP excepted?

(I'll bet there are some that I'm forgetting.)

As a programmer, can you frame it as a programming problem (as a treat just for me)? Are you, like, trying to populate an array of skills associated with a personnel?

OK, let me lay it out this way, to be more concrete:

Geordi La Forge aboard a Type VI Shuttle at Transfer Vaccines
Aboard the shuttle with him are a Medical Kit and an Engineering Kit.

Let's say there are no dilemmas under the mission. When Geordi and Shuttle attempt, we know he can solve the mission because we know he has Navigation via his Special Skill and ENGINEER via the EKit and MEDICAL via the MKit.

Sound correct so far?

Now, let's change it up. Let's say Geordi is affected by Crippling Injury. What skills does Geordi have? How can we find out?
One way is to list off all "regular skills". And if any of those are present, ignore them.
ENGINEER - added via EKit, but it's still a regular, so bye bye.
MEDICAL - added via EKit, but it's still a regular, so bye bye
Navigation - ... ?

Is "Navigation" a "regular skill"? Yes.
Does Geordi have "Navigation"? Arguably, he does, if he can normally solve the mission.
Should it get "lost" due to Crippling Injury? I'd argue yes, because it meets those two criteria.
And if that is the case, how do we logically give Navigation to Geordi? By "gain" skill mechanism, is my vote.

That doesn't answer the question: Does Geordi have Navigation skill?
Is he at a [S] location? There, he has the skill. Anywhere else, he doesn't.

If he loses his first listed skill, he won't have Nav even at [S], because he doesn't have a skill granting him Nav.

And I'd argue that if you're downloading a Navigation personnel he doesn't count, because he doesn't get the skill until he's at a [S] location.

I agree. I think we must conclude that Geordi has Navigation while at [1E-S]. How do we logically make that happen, so a computer knows it is true?
