Make It So 2010

The original Make It So: The Search for the Next Assistant Game Designer began with applications in October 2010. A total of twenty (20) applications were received and all twenty (20) applicants were invited to participate. In Phase I, four (4) teams of contestants competed in head to head matches, with the Bajoran Team versus the Cardassian Team, and the Klingon Team against the Romulan Team. After each challenge, one member from each losing team was eliminated.

For Phase II, the teams were reshuffled into just two teams that continued to compete against each other, with the losing team each week losing a member. When just six (6) contestants remained, the competition switched to individual challenges and eliminations until just three (3) remained. These top 3 competed in The Final Challenge saw the top contestants manage their own design team as they build a fifteen (15) card boutique expansion.

Challenges

The challenges for Make It So were designed to test the contestant's knowledge of the rules, the strengths and weaknesses of each affiliation, and their understanding of how the game works and should develop. In addition, challenges were about teamwork, time management, and communication. Challenges often were designed to test or illustrate the understanding of specific game concepts, both in general and specific to Second Edition.

Challenge #1: The Dual Dilemma Dilemma

The design team has decided to make the use of dual dilemmas riskier. Design a fifteen card "expansion" that makes the use of dual dilemmas more risky, with at least one card for each affiliation and sub-affiliation (except , which are optional).

Challenge #2: The Mission Mission

Design at least six (6) non-headquarters missions with gametext, one for each of the six weakest affiliations or sub-affiliations.

Challenge #3: The Word is the Key

Create six (6) events, each of which references or works with an existing keyword that your team feels is underused. You must select at least three different existing keywords.

Challenge #4: Choose Your Own Adventure

Create a thematic cycle of six (6) cards (1 Dilemma, 1 Equipment/Event/Interrupt, 1 Personnel, 1 Ship, plus 2 more cards of any types) that are drawn from the same Star Trek story (an episode, multi-episode arc or movie).

Challenge #5: The Expansion Blues

Create your vision of the Xindi without creating a new affiliation. You must create at least one (1) equipment/event/interrupt, one (1) personnel and one (1) ship and must create a total of exactly nine (9) cards.

Challenge #6: Imagine

Create nine (9) cards, each based on one of the following images selected by the Art Team:

Click on an image to see a larger, high-resolution version. (They will open in a new window.)

Challenge #7: Not Inspired by Ferengi

Create six (6) cards that take advantage of the following hypothetical ruling: personnel are now present with themselves.

Challenge #8: There's Something About Meta

Create nine (9) cards that are designed to adjust the current meta-game, such that at least one (1) of your cards hurts a existing strong deck, and at least one (1) of your cards boosts an existing weak deck.

Challenge #9: Read Between the Lines

Create updated versions of the listed cards based on the feedback provided by your playtest teams.

Challenge #10: Reborn/Delivery

Former contestants (members of Team Non-Aligned) are given one final chance to rejoin the game with Challenge #10.1, Reborn: Create a cycle of affiliated cards (limit one per affiliation or sub-affiliation) that adapt the function of an existing 2E equipment, event, or interrupt specifically for that affiliation or sub-affiliation's themes and mechanics..

At the same time, the Borg Team and the Federation Team vie for their final victory as they prepare their final, forty-five (45) card virtual expansion with Challenge #10.2: Delivery.

Challenge #11: Tradition!

Create three (3) cards based on or inspired by one of the many traditions in Second Edition.

Challenge #12: No I In Team

Create a "team" in the same vein as those that appeared in Allegiance.

The Final Challenge

As the Lead Designer of your own team, create a fifteen card boutique expansion designed to be released before (and legal at) the World Championship.
