Speedy Klingons |
Introduction |
Today's deck was inspired by Boreth and the Followers of Kahless, as well as a thread on the 2E Gameplay board asking if speed was dead. I wanted to do a complete Bare Minimum deck, but Al has lately been rocking the TN dilemma mill deck, and knew a 20 card dilemma pile would be disastrous. My paired dilemma pile was an Underlying/Loss pile. |

Round 1 | | Bye | BY (0) |
I wrestled mightily with grading the conceptual questions on my students' tests. I was victorious. |

Round 2 | | Al Schaefer | MW (+5)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Yup. TN mill, just as feared. I got very lucky because Al could not get out War of Attrition. I realized that if he had gotten that running, he would have blown completely through my dilemmas, because he can also gain skills from those removed dilemmas, effectively undermining the skill bump from Underlying/Loss. One sweet move was me using Swashbuckler to put 3 interrupts on top and then him milling them to RFG some of my dilemmas. I was strangely OK with that.
The biggest issue that came up here, besides all my biology being stacked at the bottom of the deck, is how often can you can use Klingon Riker. On my last turn, after time had been called, I had completed Provoke Interstellar Incident and had started working my way through Brute Force. He hit me with Dreamer, something that killed Divok (my only Physics) and then We'll Never Know. I had The Promise in hand. I thought I could use that to give Divok's skills to Kahmis, then use Riker twice to get the remaining physics. I know for a fact that that won't work with cards like Rule 33 that are a when trigger, but I thought that while could be triggered multiple times. After 5 minutes of frantic rulebook searching, we used Navaar's errata (from while to when) to finally come to the conclusion that I could do that. I finished Brute force for the MW. |
Maggie was playing a new slim Klingon solver deck and I really made the mistake of leaving Riker on the table. I had one or two opportunities to hit him with Secret Identity, but Instead I went after Kahless. In the end, that would be the difference in the game. At least two times Maggie was able to gain some skills with Riker that allowed her to finish a mission. I'd also made a call early in the game to use Revok's ability to top deck 3, to make her top deck dilemmas after she had put 3 interrupts on top of my deck with Swashbuckler. I wouldn't draw another interrupt the rest of the game. Forget the fact that I was only able to get 4 or 5 dilemmas out of play, the inconsistency of the milling combined with some poor decision making and Maggie's dilemma pile doubling up dilemma requirements led to a hard fought loss. |

Round 3 | | Eric Bieche | FW (+35) |
Eric was playing his old, reliable AQ Borg deck. I was worried about Interlinking against my dilemmas and was happy I had put Dereliction of Duty and Psychokinetic Control in the pile. Eric was playing an ACE/TT pile with this deck and that did make me worry about how small my draw deck was. I really got lucky with my first two missions. He managed to stop my first attempt at Investigate Alien Probe and Boreth, but he didn't kill a lot of people in either case. I was able to solve easily on my 2nd attempt for each mission. I then went over to Brute Force and started with 9. He got lucky on this one, as he consumed two ACEs and killed all my Security. There were 7 under, so if I could get some back, I'd be able to solve on my next attempt. At this point I have 2 missions down and he's barely started his first. He attempts and completes Wolf 359, Assimilate Resistance, taking Filuz out of my discard pile. He then goes to Plot Invasion and blows through on his first attempt. *grumblegrumble*twoUnyieldings*grumble* He has enough range to head to Salvage Borg Ship. I managed to kill First, and then returned two to hand with Cave-In, which means I could then stop his whole crew with Historical Pursuit. On one of those attempts, I drew Kortar with Swashbuckler, which was a big help. I used him to get back two of my Security personnel. Time was called, we were tied, and I was hoping to draw into a 3rd, but no dice, so I decided to take a big gamble.
Remember who he had 7 cards under Brute Force? Well, I attempted with 10 to tempt him to throw a dilemma or two my way, and he did. I knew it was a risk, but it was the only way I could Riker my way into the FW. He picked Final Adventure and named 3 cost. I didn't have any 3s and walked through it for the FW. |

Closing Thoughts |
This deck is fun, but I felt, as Ben would say, "cold, naked and alone" without the support cards I'm used to. I was really wishing for UD and an Escape. Kortar helps with that latter as long as he doesn't get killed himself. I think I could beef it up to a real slim, fast winner. I like the Underlying/Loss pile and an Univited or two would help that along too. |
