Tournament Report - 1E - Worlds Day One

RomulanThis is the Time... to Show Them Everything
Introduction
Following a decade of self-imposed exile, I returned to GenCon to take the stage at the granddaddy of them all, the World Championships. Considering TNG Romulan had only one tough luck loss to its credit at Continentals, I was content to either shoot my way into Day 2 with green or go out in a blaze of glory.

Round 1FederationJulia Y-F ChenFW (+100)
Lady Phoenix was rocking space centric TNG Feds, but had no answer for The Cloud and a beefed up D'deridex. Once the Goraxus tagged her lone surviving ship with a Romulan Ambush, McCoy & Co. danced around a Personal Duty / Friendly Fire combo to seal the shutout. FW 100-0.

Round 2FerengiMatthew McClainMW (+30)
Die Hard was also piloting Romulan, and sought to police the spaceline to make Quantum Fissure impassable. However, an ill-timed battle with a Husnock Ship lead to a green vs. green counterattack on my turn, and from that point forward his dilemmas could not hold me down for long. MW 60-30.

Round 3BajoranMaquisJohannes KlarhauserFW (+65)View opponent's Report
The Kaiser was dealing Bajoran / Son'a, but lost Injector Assembly One and his opening crew early when the Terix paid him a surprise visit. With him sufficiently penned in behind a Dead End, I methodically churned through Covert Installation and Cloaked Mission to nail down the victory. FW 100-35.

Round 4BajoranCardassianJason DrakeFW (+35)
The Icon was utilizing Bajoran / Cardassian, and damaged his own ship three separate times via Gomtuu Shockwave. As the Deranas ran interference in the Gamma Quadrant, Lore and a handful of androids pounded through two planet missions in rapid succession before solving Amnesty Talks at the wire. FW 100-65.

Round 5Non-AlignedHirogenStefan SlabyFL (-50)
Mr. Unbreakable was captaining Hirogen, and kept my guns silent throughout by staying out of reach over in the Delta Quadrant. Armed with a set of Ocular Implants and a trio of skill sharing former Borg, he made quick work of my dilemmas in what was a cordial encounter with the current World Champ. FL 100-50.

Round 6Herman ChanFW (+30)
The Human Highlight Reel was schooling me on First Contact Feds, but left a huge crew exposed due to The Arsenal: Divided and Aggressive Behavior. After the Goraxus relieved him of the majority of his personnel, I knocked out Investigate Sighting to punch my ticket into the final day of play. FW 100-70.

Closing Thoughts
Finishing 5-1 in a star studded field was a far better record than I expected, and speaks largely to the false sense of security most current 1E players seem to have when they square off against battle. If an old vet like myself can return to the game and blast their way into the Top 8, I gotta believe anyone can.
