Dilemma Discard 5th time |
Introduction |
Didn't have enough time to work on a new draw deck this month. I had planned to try a new dilemma pile, but time ran out to make that happen. I only got to make a few changes to the dilemmas and give this deck another go. |
|
Round 1 | | Eric Bieche | FW (+65) |
I started with a decent draw and got War of Attrition out early. Eric was playing new-old-school Alpha borg; I didn't really know what new surprises to expect. He cancelled my War after about 4 turns, but some decent dilemmas had made it out of play. We went back and forth quite a bit, but there really wasn't anything too new or crazy with the borg that I didn't remember from the old days. Even though I only got 9 dilemmas out of play, I was able to complete Betazed for the win in overtime. |

Round 2 | | Maggie Geppert | ML (-5)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Maggie was playing a new slim Klingon solver deck and I really made the mistake of leaving Riker on the table. I had one or two opportunities to hit him with Secret Identity, but Instead I went after Kahless. In the end, that would be the difference in the game. At least two times Maggie was able to gain some skills with Riker that allowed her to finish a mission. I'd also made a call early in the game to use Revok's ability to top deck 3, to make her top deck dilemmas after she had put 3 interrupts on top of my deck with Swashbuckler. I wouldn't draw another interrupt the rest of the game. Forget the fact that I was only able to get 4 or 5 dilemmas out of play, the inconsistency of the milling combined with some poor decision making and Maggie's dilemma pile doubling up dilemma requirements led to a hard fought loss. |
Yup. TN mill, just as feared. I got very lucky because Al could not get out War of Attrition. I realized that if he had gotten that running, he would have blown completely through my dilemmas, because he can also gain skills from those removed dilemmas, effectively undermining the skill bump from Underlying/Loss. One sweet move was me using Swashbuckler to put 3 interrupts on top and then him milling them to RFG some of my dilemmas. I was strangely OK with that.
The biggest issue that came up here, besides all my biology being stacked at the bottom of the deck, is how often can you can use Klingon Riker. On my last turn, after time had been called, I had completed Provoke Interstellar Incident and had started working my way through Brute Force. He hit me with Dreamer, something that killed Divok (my only Physics) and then We'll Never Know. I had The Promise in hand. I thought I could use that to give Divok's skills to Kahmis, then use Riker twice to get the remaining physics. I know for a fact that that won't work with cards like Rule 33 that are a when trigger, but I thought that while could be triggered multiple times. After 5 minutes of frantic rulebook searching, we used Navaar's errata (from while to when) to finally come to the conclusion that I could do that. I finished Brute force for the MW. |

Round 3 | | Brian Leonard | FW (+60) |
Brian appeared to have a tough time getting a ship. I recognized this early and cancelled a These Are The Voyages, then I used Keevan to capture Data, and Weyoun to put Kirk on the bottom. I thought I would skate off to a quick win, but once Brian found a ship he was off to the races with his hi-integrity team. Again, dilemma milling proved to be difficult (only got 4 this time) so Betazed was going to be a tough grind. Thankfully, Brian played Guinan at one point and the extra 5 points made Survey New World a viable option with a couple of micro-team attempts. |

Closing Thoughts |
Really annoyed by the lack of consistency of the milling today. I only had War of Attrition out for 4 turns total in 3 games. That's crap. I only drew it the one time in the game with Eric and it was not to be found in the remaining two games. I really like this deck, I like the feel and the connection to the story, but the lack of consistency is tough to deal with. Hostile Takeover was not as cool as I thought it would be, but Nothing to Lose and Arresting Display were pretty effective. |
