Tournament Report - 1E Modern - Vandros IV Regional
2011-05-15 - 04:00 PM
CardassianMetzgerei Moset
Introduction
My first sanctioned constructed 1E event. I fully expected to get hammered by the veterans.
My deck is based on a design by Thomas Kamiura, adapted to what cards I actually own. I forgot to add some useful things like Labor Camp, Parek, Oran and Holodeck doors.

Round 1BorgChristopher CoyleFW (+50)
Christopher has been a huge help during the past weeks. We playtested a while ago and explained to me how some of the things in 1E work, suggested dilemma combos that might actually be useful, etc., for which I'm very grateful.
He played a rather slim Borg deck that did a lot of stuff that I knew was possible in 1E, but had never seen in action. For example, I had never seen the universal Space mission in a game. With two of them at either end of the Alpha Quadrant, I seeded my gender-related dilemmas under the ones on my left. Luckily, Chris attempted the ones on my right, which had the more useful ones underneath.
Compared to his first turn and the number of personnel he got out, my opening with 3 Cardassians, Overseer Odo and Morn seemed modest at best. However, I drew into a Crell Moset on turn 2, and with Process Ore, Crell and ASP I was able to cycle through my deck quite quickly.
When I had about 9 personnel out, I attempted Secure Homeworld at Cardassia and ran into The Clown: Bitter Medicine, followed by God. I didn't have the Integrity to begin with, but, I didn't have a ship out either, so I dodged that part.
When Christopher was ready to go, he ran into Personal Duty, which stopped all but one personnel thanks to skill sharing, and then hit Friendly Fire. This meant that he couldn't attempt the mission for two turns, and so he couldn't complete Harness Omega Particle in time and changed his objective.
On my turn, I played a ship so I could attempt at Cardassia and completed, earning Zefram Cochrane's telescope. With that, I was able to peek at the dilemmas at my space missions and was able to complete two of them. Together with some bonus points (I managed to score some Dabo points eventually, after I had revealed a ship 3 times!), I got to 100 before. Getting his Queen stopped for some turns with Hippocratic Oath was a big help, I guess, as did Topological Anomaly 4747.

Round 2ByeBY (0)
Tyler had to drop after the first round, so I joined the Tribble tournament instead. In the last round, I finally managed to go out and score my first bunch of Tribbles. The game is really good fun, I think I'll schedule a tournament after each of my events from now on.

Round 3CardassianFederationAndreas LimmerFL (-65)View opponent's Report
Andreas was certainly the favourite here. He had generously donated a lot of cards last time we met, and, like Christopher, he's always ready to share some insight into basic and advanced 1E gameplay.
His Federation/Cardassian deck used an elaborate chain of downloads to place a lot of personnel and ships into play early on. Since I couldn't get Crell Moset out, it took several turns until I was able to catch up with Andreas' personnel as far as skills and attributes were concerned.
Andreas attempted Agricultural Assessment, where he had played The Genesis Effect to nullify Dead End (I didn't have one in the deck). Unfortunately, he had Christopher Pike in his deck, which meant he breezed right through my gender-related combo of Female's Love Interest - Talosian Cage - Matriarchal Society. However, Mr FLI worked his mojo on Inge Eiger, the only Geology Andreas had in play at that time, so at least he wasn't able to complete the mission on this turn.
Myself, I attempted Secure Homeworld and was stopped by Scientific Method after an Unscientific Method had killed my only Science personnel. For the A Fast Ship Would Be Nice that followed UM, I chose to hand over the Jovis to Andreas in order to at least keep my Medical personnel alive.
Next turn, Andreas completed AA by bringing in the Geology (I think it was Vina who provided it eventually) and completed the mission, earning Zefram Cochrane's Telescope. Now it was only a matter of time until he arranged his cards to minimize the damage from the dilemmas.
However, I surprised myself by completing Secure Homeworld, as I was able to play one Science personnel from hand, assign another one as a support personnel, and provided a third one via Elim Garak (2E), who reported for free to Terok Nor and flew over to Cardassia on the Groumall. Now, I had my own copy of the Telescope, but clearing out the dilemmas at Kressari Rendezvous until I hit a Garbage Scow was all I could do before Andreas completed his missions on his next turn for the win.
Andreas was kind enough to let me play out my next turn, and it turned out that (with some coaching by Andreas, e.g. I didn't think of Ops downloading) I would actually have been able to complete both Kressari Rendezvous and Acquire Illicit Explosives that turn to get to 100. Good stuff.
