The Big Treaty Project, Episode 5: Spoonfed (Cardassian/Federation) |
Introduction |
My first DS9 sealed tournament. I had never played during that era, and didn't know what to expect. My best pulls were a Dal'rok, Duonetic Field Generator, Dukat, and Kira. Two treaties (Fed/Car and Fed/Baj) looked good, but with no Bajoran ships and a single outpost, it turned out to be rather difficult to actually use Kira effectively. |

Round 1 | | Chris Lobban | TT (0)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Chris had the Cardassians, and we only had 8 missions in total, so lots of shared stuff. Two of the missions were ignored, since apparently we dumped all our misseeds there. Chris was first out of the gate, and completed his outpost mission on the first go, but was stuck on the planet due to a Duonetic Generator. While Chris was digging for another Engineer to get his personnel out of their misery, I completed two missions, but couldn't find a second Officer or a big ship to complete one of the two remaining missions. On his last turn, Chris eventually found what he was looking for, made a big attempt and was successful, then was out of Range and had to deck himself out. Fun stuff, 65-65. |
The game started off pretty strong... I had a solid crew put together, finally drew a ship (though it was just a shuttlecraft), and beamed down to the planet to attempt. Then I realized my first mistake... I didn't actually need to wait for a ship to beam down and attempt the mission my outpost was at. Oops, it's been too long... anyway, my Johannes hadn't attempted anything yet either, so at least I wasn't majorly losing ground. I managed to complete the mission rather quickly (first attempt, I believe) which was good. The bad part... Duotonic Field Generators, and only 1 Engineer in the group. So, with most of my guys stranded on the planet, I went back to "Draw 1/Play 1" waiting to pull a couple more. In the meantime, my opponent went on a spree attempting/completing a couple other missions. My dilemmas slowed him down for a few turns, but didn't pose any major issues. I managed to race over an grab a Kidnapped crew member at one point, which was fun. And I played an enormous pile of cards, though somehow still didn't have enough to complete any of my other missions (most of my Officers, and a lot of other good Science skills were stuck on the planet still). Finally, the second-last card of my deck turned out to be my third engineer. Right after I drew her, my opponent drew the last card of his deck. So I had exactly one turn to do something, and I was 30 points behind. I played the third engineer, beamed down to finally free my stranded crew, and went to blitz the closest mission that I could attempt (which had required the officers stuck on the planet... and Johannes hadn't attempted it yet because his second officer was the bottom card of his own deck, that he'd just drawn). My mega-crew of 22 personnel, all crammed into that one little shuttlecraft, managed to blow through the dilemmas and complete the mission. I drew my last card and ended up with a 65/65 tie. Well fought on both sides (and heavily influenced by a Rakal shuffle on both sides, it seemed). |

Round 2 | | Kenneth Tufts | FL (-100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
I was one turn away from playing the right guy to steal the first mission that Ken cleared, but couldn't complete because of Fightin' Words. I did't draw into a second Treachery for Kressari all game, didn't see my third Engineer to get my people back from the two planet missions I could have completed but which had Duonetic on/under them, and couldn't get too my far away missions in time before Ken won. A rather disappointing showing. |
More duped missions, This game i GOT amazing early draws drawign a full set of mission skilsl for everything by turn 5 or 6, then it was just a matter of getitng enough fodder out and workign through dilemmas, before my opponent could for the win. |

Round 3 | | Auwerd Bijker | FW (+35) |
Auwerd had Bajorans, with two missions that could be done by Kira herself! However, I didn't want to run the risk of not finding Kira in time, so I used my best combos to block those missions and misseeded under one mission at each end of the spaceline. I had mission skills for my outpost mission in play early, including two Engineers, so I attempted the planet despite the danger of Duonetic lurking there. The mission fell quickly, and Reignite Dead Star was also done before Auwerd got out. He then proceeded to complete Cardassia, and stole a Badlands mission, but I finally had the second Treachery in play to do Kressari and then stole Acquire Illicit for the close win. |

Round 4 | | William Hoskin | FW (+75) |
Will had Cardassians, and amazingly, no mission were duplicated. Will set up his Nor and Outpost in the same area that I had set my eyes on, and as Will had no Treaty in play, my Bajoran and Fed icon missions were relatively safe. A big-span Badlands region then cut off our remaining missions, so the battle was up for the five or six mission right by our outposts. Will cleared out my Eliminate Virus first, but didn't have the skills to complete. Still, he took the lead by stealing my Kressari for 25 points, but then my Duonetic/Dal'rok/wall combo trapped several of his people on a planet and killed them off one by one. I got on the board by stealing one of Will's mission (the one under which you can seed universal Bajorans, of which I had plenty to mis-seed), and after drawing for a Civilian for several turns, also stole Acquire Illicit Explosives. With Will massing new personnel, I decided to nullify the Dal'rok that by now had decimated all but one of Will's people at that mission, and stole that mission, too. That 9 of my guys were now trapped on the planet, but I had left enough guys at my outpost to attempt Eliminate Virus. I only had one Exobiolgy in my deck, but I found it just before Will drew into his own Exo, and so the first mission cleared was the last to be completed this game for the win. Great game. |
