Maquis Repetitive Stalling [v2] |
Introduction |
In the build up to the tournament, I'd had several ideas of what deck to play. Then I'd look at some cards and think I could build a deck around them. Short story: I still didn't have a deck the day before the tournament. I had recently found a bunch of my old deck lists though, so I decided to update one of them and see if it still held up. The deck in question was my Maquis deck, played at Worlds 2005, that used the Ressikan Flute to play 3xStalling for Time and then Organized Terrorist Activities each turn. I mainly updated the dilemma pile, as very few cards have been created since since 2005 that helps my deck. |

Round 1 | | Daniel Giddings | MW (+30)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Danny was playing Mirror Starfleet. I chuckled to myself at the thought that his empty-hand strategy made redundant my plan to keep his hand empty. Besides a couple of warmup games the night before, I hadn't played this deck in six years. I was rusty. I made it through my first mission attempt and played the Flute to begin my shenanigans. Unfortunately, I then had to complete a space mission. Danny's Reflections dilemma was shutting me down each time. One third of my deck was events or interrupts, and he had at least six mirror personnel in play each time he used the dilemma. I eventually completed the mission, but time was very close to being up at that point. I knew I couldn't score enough points to win the game with Deploy the Fleet, so I was left having to try and complete two missions on my final turn. I completed one, but in the process lost one of the skills I needed for my fourth mission.
MW 80-50 |
James drops Athos and then four missions with Integrity based requirements. ‘Should mean big teams’, I think to myself, mentally wringing my hands together as I think about my dilemma pile. Wrong. Turns out to be small teams of Inad(s), Vic, Benbeck and Conor, with the Maquis personnel in there to add Commander keywords to ships, and to fly those Non-Aligned hippies about the place.
James manages to complete Farpoint with little trouble, and, as he’s completed a mission with Acquistion, can now play his Flute, and starts playing and recycling OTA and Stalling. Pretty soon my personnel are leaving play, then being shuffled away.
Luckily, I manage to pull off one mission, and, on James’ final turn, with two missions under his belt, he has to complete two missions for a full win. IIRC, on his first attempt at his third mission (Alien Probe) a Healing Hands stops his Rebecca Sullivan, taking away his essential Biology.
Modified Win for James.

Round 2 | | Stuart Marsh | FW (+70) |
Stuart was playing a non-aligned Genetically Enhanced deck that technically couldn't attempt three of his four missions. I didn't spot this though, so the game was played as normal. We both started off pretty evenly completing one mission each. I had only drawn into one Stalling For Time, so I wasn't slowing Stuart down as much as I would have liked. The game changer came at his second mission, were I pulled off a combo ending in Biochemical Hyperacceleration. Seven personnel began the attempt. Three ended it. The turn after, I drew my second Stalling For Time, and from that point on was able to return enough personnel to hand each turn to prevent Stuart leaving his headquarters for the rest of the game. Meanwhile I completed my second mission, and used the Flute to retreive copies of Deploy The Fleet for the win (on the final turn of the game.)

Round 3 | | William Hoskin | FW (+70)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Will was playing a Cardassian solver with a little capture thrown in to disrupt the opponent. During our warm-up games the night before we had one victory each, and we both knew this game would come down to whether I could stop Will getting a two mission win using Labor Camp points. I had a great opening hand of three Federation Maquis personnel, but it would be several turns before I drew into a Cascade Virus or a Stalling for Time. Meanwhile, Will played an Evek early on, but thankfully the only personnel revealed was one I had already played so he didn't capture anyone. The first game changer came when Will attempted his second mission. I played All Consuming Evil followed by Biochemical Hyperacceleration. The second dilemma consumed was another copy of All Consuming Evil, so I got to kill two personnel and return three to hand. BANG! I thought I had the game all wrapped up at that point, but a decision I made shortly afterwards changed that. I was one Integrity short of completing my second mission, and realized that I could boost Santos' attributes using his order. The only two events I could destroy were my just played Ressikan Flute or the Biogenic Weapon sitting on Will's mission with several overcome dilemmas beneath it. I had to keep the Biogenic Weapon where it was so I destroyed the flute to complete the mission. I never drew into another copy all game, and thanks to the number of times I had played Organized Terrorist Activites, I calculated I had to complete four missions to win the game. This I managed, but once again I only did so on the final turn of the game. Phew!
FW 100-30 |
Having played two warmup games against this deck (winning one and losing one) we both knew it would all be down to the opening hand and a few lucky draws. On James first turn he got three fed Maquis people out and I was in for some trouble, When My Evek drew a blank that was the end. James was slowly removing people from play so I was left with Evek, Tain and a few low cost Cardassians who James couldn't remember. When he managed to get his first mission done and played the Ressikan Flute I was just hoping I could make it close but that was not the case.

Round 4 | | Stuart Motley | FL (-65) |
Stuart was playing a DS9 Promenade/downloader deck that was insanely fast. At his first mission attempt, I drew a Biochemical Hyperacceleration and thought that it would have a good chance of hitting if I could remove Melora Pazlar (and her skill gaining ability) from the attempt. Unfortunatelty for me, a Secret Identity resulted in her being replaced by Data. His higher attributes meant that Stuart could overcome my dilemma with the strength requirements and complete the mission. From that point, it was game over. I did manage to hit Stuart with a Dreamer and the Dream - causing him to lose Kirk, Rebuilding the Fleet and a Grav-Plating Trap - and I gained a little hope. I then gained some more hope when I took out what I thought was all personnel with one of the skills needed for his third mission. I'd missed a few personnel though, and he walked it to win the game. I hadn't even played Ressikan Flute. My only consolation was that I was the first player to complete a mission against Stuart, and I was one turn away from completing a second.

Round 5 | | Nicholas Yankovec | FL (-75) |
Nick was playing a Dominion two mission win deck. My dilemma pile failed me at his first attempt in space. Of the eight dilemmas drawn, three were duplicates, and two were Planet. I played all three that I could, but they didn't stop him. I then tried to take out Duran'Adar at his second mission (and failed). I did take out a Distant Exploration and hoped I could force him to three missions, but he played and used a Jem'Hadar Ambush to get the points he needed. Once again, losing a mission quickly lost me the game.
