Tournament Report - 2E - European Continentals Day One |

Starfleet Vienna |
Introduction |
I played Klingons in Florida so decided to go with Starfleet in Vienna, simple enough. if I had played a tournament before the continentals I would have changed a couple of cards. |
|
Round 1 | | Earned Bye | EB (+100) |
Managed to forget to change my phone to the correct timeline so got in part way through the round, luckily I had an earned bye. |
|
|
Round 2 | | sascha kiefer | FW (+100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Sacsha is always a great guy to play against and was playing a Klingon solver doing 40 point missions then burning the extra points to either speed himself up or slow down the opponent, sadly for him I got out and got my space missions very quickly and after that there was no stopping them at the two Delphic planets. I was able to stop Sasha crew because I knew them all (except the Worf) from the deck I had played in Florida. |
The Gumbo was served very "hot" that day, strong JUJU too.....Some lucky/unlucky random dilemma picks...0-100 with warp 9. So we had some time to continue our conversation from the Biermeister. |
|
Round 3 | | Josef Lemberger | FL (-40) |
Joseph is another great player, generous to a fault. Every time I think I have him he has the counter. First getting rid of my sight for sore eyes when I have two at what costs in hand, then managing to have one attribute point over what was needed for a mission after I had stopped what I had thought was enough people. The last straw was nuking my lustful distraction. Great game just wished I could have got that one attribute point more... :( |
|
|
Round 4 | | Johannes Mette | FW (+100) |
Johannes was playing a duel Hq wiz bang. Whizzing along getting people out for cheap then getting 12 counters of people put under your deck. The only issue Jahannes had was completing the mission before I had run through my missions. |
|
|
Round 5 | | Tobias Rausmann | FL (-10) |
At this point I'm thinking one more win and I should be through, only problem is the four 5 space voyager decks that are standing in my way. It had to happen eventually I had dodged the 5 space and Starfleet heavy field so far but no longer. It was this round where I realised just how poorly my deck does against people who do their first space mission before I can, I also realised that one of the new dilemmas really screws up my deck. I was attempting my 4th mission knowing that I only had 2 archeology I he deck and only one of them in play, hopping to get a few more dilemmas under before my second one came out, no such luck, Tobias got his fourth mission and I was still digging for my final Archeology. A very tight game. |
|
|
Round 6 | | Stefan Slaby | FL (-100) |
This one was not so tight, I knew Stefan had played a 5space battle deck last year and figured he would do the same this time. So I waited for two ships and enough people to staff them both and attempt so that I could get both ships back to Earth after an attempt, unfortunately I forgot what I was doing, luckily Stephan didn't get the big guns out and I survived a turn, unfortunately one chela the game followed by the dilemma that nails my deck for two turns in a row meant he was well out in front and I couldn't do anything about it. |

Round 7 | | Benjamin Liebich | FL (-5)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
So it was all down to this last round, which everyone of us won would be through into day two and the other would not be. Benjamin made some amazing card plays and was well out in front until the turn I completed my space mission, that same turn I burnt through one of the missions and had run out of range. Could I get one more turn to do the mission, yes managed to stop him with a total of five dilemmas under his last mission. All I had to do was get my final mission and I was home, or at least that was what I thought at the time. Flew through the mission cheating past stops and ignoring random selections only to remember that Benjamin had completed his space missions before I had done mine, this would leave me on 95 points argh. I didn't get another turn to dig for my point scoring card as Benjamin completed for the win on the next turn. |
So it all came down to this final match. Will and I both had 2 wins, 3 losses and an EB. So whoever would win this round would almost certainly move on to the finals. I came out of the gate strong, powering through my first two missions in all the Bajoran's micro-teaming glory while I was perfectly clear that it was adamant to keep Will at Jupiter as long as I possibly could. Knowing from the extensive testing that we did that as soon as SF completes their space, they're basically unstoppable. As expected, by the time Will finally managed to complete Jupiter he powered through the first Delphic planet in a single attempt. At that point I was at my final mission. Will managed to stop me but had to put a couple of dilemmas under so I knew that if I'd get another turn it'd probably be an easy solve. All I had to do was stop him at his last mission. Easier said than done. An Archer/T'Pol/Accumulated Knowledge nightmare awaited and he managed to complete the mission.
At this point in time my faith in humanity got restored and I have to award the fairness-award of the tournament to Mr. William Hoskin!
I was ready to concede and had my hand out to congratulate him on the win when Will graciously pointed out that he was sitting on 95 points because I completed my space before him.
What a class act!
As I predicted, I did a mini attempt on the next turn and went on to win. |

Closing Thoughts |
Always always always play a deck before taking it to a continentals/worlds. Let's try not to make the same mistake in 5 weeks time in London. I hope to see you there. |
