Introduction |
I brushed off the olde Assimilation deck for todays tournament. Pretty much the same as usual, although I had removed 3 copies of the Harvest Drone, and a copy of Reborn, as I didn't really need the extra assimilation to make it work. After reading the regional reports, and the interview with Kevin Jaeger, I found myself intrigued by his "Unfair Comparisson" dilemma pile, so I borrowed it for this tournament, with a couple of minor changes to see how it worked. |

Round 1 | | Doug Hughes | ML (-20)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
...and obviously Kevin doesn't have a Doug playing in his tournament region. Doug knew I was playing assimilation so sat at his stupid hq without doing anything except trying to score points from GUYS and P&P. After I had drawn through my deck, he could no longer score points, so the score was tied at 10 all. I should have attempted missions sooner without assimilated personnel, my mistake. Doug attempted his first space mission with 16 personnel; I had a 30 card dilemma pile, so I was certain I would draw Bio-neural Computer Core and Distress Call, or something useful. Nope. I ended up playing 4 dilemmas, and managed to stop 3 and kill 1, I believe. Next turn, I flew over and assimilated 4 personnel. Doug flew home, swapped ships, and attempted his planet mission with 10. I assimilated 1 with Bio-Neural, and stopped 2 more (stupid stooges) and he completed. I attempted my first mission, but as I had to pick people up first from Romulus, I had not the range to fly any further. I actually managed to stop Dougs attempt with no dilemmas under. I completed my space mission next turn, but failed to complete my 3rd mission. I realised I had made a huge error the turn before by not using Fifth to get a copy of One Of The Borg, which would have given me a modified win. Time was called, and it finished with Doug getting the modified win. Ah well. |
Nick the Borg today eh ?
Well... strategy vs Borg is too hide at your homeworld then rush out and do missions quickly.
I 'decided' to follow this strategy only because I didn't see a ship until I had 16 personnel in play! 16! That's absolutely ridiculous.
Anyways... that meant I was attempting with 16 to start with ... and then whoever was left after Nick started assimilating.
This game descended very quickly into a game of "who can cheat past each others dilemmas fastest".
turns out that was me ... but I wasn't fast enough and only got a modified win.
Still... a win is a win! |

Round 2 | | TF_Loki | FW (+65) |
TF_Loki (and no, I don't know where the name comes from I will have to ask!) was playing TOS Inegrity. Luckily I know that deck rather well - he attempted planet first, my dilemmas worked well, and next turn I got to assimilate 3 personnel. The game was pretty much over from that point, as I had managed to assimilate Kirk who I put to use when attempting missions next turn. Two missions completed and a couple of One With The Borgs gave me the win. |

Round 3 | | Unjustly Banned | FW (+55)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Ah, now James and his determination to surpass Doug's Romulan deck. James needs to let this go, Doug is Doug, and its not the deck, its the man playing it. Anyway, James started with tactics like Doug's: sit at his hq and try and amass bonus points. I destroyed most of his events (P&P GUYS and Power Shift) and went and attemped a space mission with no assimilated personnel. I thought I was going to get massacred, but Coolant Shift stopped NOBODY! (no Engineer's or 1 cost personnel) and I walked through Gomtuu with Locutus and had 50 points after my first mission :) Then James decided he had to go attempt, losing three to Whispers, followed by a savage assimilation attempt from me (1 Reborn, 2 Abductions, and 2 Unrelentings gave me 5 personnel, one of which was Donatra. I flew to my planet, and completed (thanks to Donatra) after using another One With The Borg. James valiantly struggled on, even removing all my K&E's from the game, but one more One With The Borg gave me the Full Win. |
Awww crap. When Nick's Borg Assimilator works, it is tough to beat. When I'm playing like a moron, I'm easy to beat. The odds were not good for me. My first mistake came when I tried to play Coolant Leak followed by Gomtuu Shock Wave at Assimilate Resistance. I knew Nick hadn't played any 1 cost drones, but I figured he must have had several Engineers. He had no Engineers, so it didn't stop anything and he breezed past Gomtuu and completed the mission on his first attempt. I had been careful not to discard any personnel though, so he couldn't assimilate anyone from my discard pile.
Worried about falling too far beind, I played a ship and went to attempt my first misison with 15 personnel. I had intended to attempt with them all, but then I remembered Nick saying he had Bio-neural Computer Core in his dilemma pile. Then, I couldn't remember what that dilemma did and became convinced that it kept assimilating personnel until you only had nine personnel remaining. I made the decision to go with two teams. Yes, I had Donatra there. Yes, I forgot about her ability to nullify dliemmas like Bio-neural. Two teams went down. Not many returned after Nick massacred then with his
dilemmas, and then swooped in to assimilate some more on the next turn.
I gallently tried to recover, but I couldn't resist the chance to make a fool of myself one last time. Donatra was one of the 15 who went down to my first mission and never returned. Nick had assimilated her. I forgot this, and played a 6 cost no skill dilemma at his next attempt. He used my Donatra against me, and a Knowledge and Experience against Assassination Attempt to complete the mission. One with the Borg on his next turn gave him the win.
