Kris Sostenbatty's deck has failed me! |
Introduction |
Few notes up front: I'm very tired writing this, so expect mistakes throughout. And, I hate Ryanair. They suck.
Will Hoskin and myself started our travelling on the Thursday night. Out flight was 7am Friday morning, so we had decided to spend Thursday in the airport playing cards, which we did till gone 4.30am. Then we flew to Aarhus, bus to the town centre where we met Peter Moller for brunch and a drink by the canal, before getting a couple hours rest before dinner, followed by a few bars and karaoke! Woo hoo, what a night. Didn't get back till very late and were up again at 7.30 the next day. Actually, I'm starting to see a connection between lack of sleep and my playing performance...
I've had quite a few trips around the World, been to Germany, Holland, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, Indiana, New Jersey, and all have been great, with fanatstic players, and some good friends (well, possibly except Belgium), but I think Denmark have hit a new high with hospitality. If you want us Brits at your tournaments in future you need to have beer, good looking women, and most importantly, karaoke. |

Round 1 | | Joltbunny | FW (+65) |
And as I sit here in my tired stupor, I'm remembering that taking notes would have been a good idea. At least people's names, as I'm shockingly bad with those. Especially foreign ones. So, I shall just call this opponent the Anaethetist (one of three doctors in attendance). First of many awesome games, the Anaethetist was a new player, having only been playing for a couple of months. He played a Klingon deck, and was surprisingly good for a new player with a limited card collection. Come on Continuing Commitee, get all the cards printable for new players!!
I beat him, but not easily - and my deck bonus points worked like a charm (for like the only game today). FW 100-35. |

Round 2 | | Peter H. Møller | FL (-10)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Ah, the Cat in the Hat, Mr. Moller himself. And no, I don't know how to put the line through the "o". The Cat was on fire today, I believe he only lost one game out of 8 all day, and undefeated throughout the Regional.
I had real trouble getting out the cards to give me bonus ponts, even with 5 points from a Guinan he played. Peter's deck was *fast*. Very fast. He had 2 missions done before I got one. Then on one turn I breezed through to get my 40 point space mission, scoring 5 points from Duran'Adar, so I know had 50 points. No sign of Distant Exploration though. I moved to my planet mission, got through the dilemmas and solved, and had forgotten that Duran'Adar was once a turn. I had 90 points. Plus I had a Vorta in hand to score me 5 points next turn, which I thought would have been enough.
My ship still had 4 range left, my I was still kicking myself for forgetting about Duran'Adar that I didn't even think about flying to my third mission and attempting. Peter "the Cat" Moller then attempted his 3rd mission, which already had one or 2 dilemmas under, and I drew dilemmas forgetting about Stir Crazy. Mistake followed mistake in these last turns it seems. Peter, as gracious as he is, offered to let me use Stir Crazy, but in I couldn't have done that. So, final score, FL 90-100. |
Nick played a 2 mission win Dominion deck, and he was much faster than I expected. I was still first out solving my first mission pretty fast, and well into the second. The he got his first 40 point mission and 5 extra points. He went for his second 40 point mission, and he actually solved it. But he didn't have all the extra scoring cards down so he was at 90 points. I got through the last mission and a and half for the win. Another very close game. |

Round 3 | | Soren Ramme Nielsen | FL (-55)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Having just been burned by Peter's TNG speed deck, I then get to play Soren's DS9 Vastly Outnumbered speed deck. I was too slow setting up, and had some awful dilemma draws. Thats about all I remember from this game! Another FL, 100-45 IIRC. |
Third game was against Nick. I’ve played Nick 3 or 4 times before. He’s a super cool guy and tons of fun to hang out and drink beers with. Nick was playing an updated version of his Dominion two-mission-win solver. With the new Eris the strategy has become a bit less risky and he won a couple of the last tournaments in London with it.
In my opening hand I had Primmin and the Centaur and it wasn’t long before I was out attempting at ARS and I believe I solved in 2 attempts. Meanwhile, I managed to stop Nick at Eliminate Sphere Network with AIoT and Inequitable Exchange capturing Duran’Adar his bonus point scoring Jem’Hadar and only engineer. Or so I thought. On his second attempt I decided not to play any dilemmas. He hadn't brought in a new engineer for the mission and I knew that he was also short on navigation for the other set of requirements. I figured that it was a fake attempt to lure me into playing dilemmas so he could use Dominion Hierachy to gain the missing engineer. Turns out I was a fool. Not only did one of the Vortas stopped by AIoT before my Inequitable Exchange have engineer; Nick also had Explicit Orders in hand that makes you gain skills during a mission attempt. So Nick walked right through on his second attempt. Fortunately, I was making good progress with my planet missions and Nick was having trouble stopping me. I think he three times in a row sat staring at an Unfair Terms that he couldn’t play because I’d named it with Sisko. FW 100-45. |
|
Round 4 | | Christian Tusborg | FW (+100) |
Christian was playing Equinox, which I have just started playing. A good deck, but with some serious weaknesses against dilemmas. I had some great dilemma draws, and unfortunately Christian couldn't get one mission complete before I'd completed my 2 missions with enough bonus points to give me a FW 100-0
At this point in the day I had finished every game within 35 minutes. Unlike my deck, I can be seriously fast. |

Round 5 | | Morten Sandberg | FL (-5) |
Going in to the last game, I was 2-2. Not great to be honest, I was hoping for a little better. Ah well, at least I got to sing karaoke.
Morten was playing a Damaged Starfleet deck. Bah, stupid Starfleet. It's not so much the Damaged Archer, I can handle that normally. It's the A Sight For Sore Eyes/Straight and Steady/Stewart Rivers/At What Cost combo. Three turns in a row playing At What Cost is a bit much surely?
Anyway, this game went the whole way, playing for over an hour, until Morten managed to get the FW, 100-95. Once again my bonus points failed me... |
