Tournament Report - 1E - Andoria Regional |
2013-05-04 - 12:00 PM |
In the beginning, He created the fish and then the Hirogen. And so shall the Fish guide us to our Prey! |
Introduction |
Battle! Competition! Challenge! Six of us started the day and by day's end, we had eight. A good number. Especially for the first Minneapolis 1E Regional in 11 years. |
|
Round 1 | | Ben Johnson | FW (+100) |
Ben originally had planned to run his E-E deck for this and had wanted to run the TMP deck for our achievement tourney the night before. What with that deck not ready, he used the E-E deck on Friday and with my help tweaked/completed this TMP build after our casual gig. It was in its initial form at 51 draw deck cards and while he felt that was too big, I had recommended to him to have the extra resources at his disposal what with the understandable expectations of both battle/destruction and major death kills he'd likely face in a regional event of this caliber. I'm not sure if my recommendations were appreciated/needed, but, I do know that over the course of the day, he was frustrated by said size and its inaugural underperformance. I was leading him by a very good margin, when his TMP era starship (which one I don't recall) with 6 Shields undesirably encountered my Spaceborne Entity that proceeded to wipe the board with him. He conceded at that moment, and tbh, I don't blame him one bit. Later, after our movie venture, we worked on tweaking/refining it down to a more respectable level and I hope he has better luck/success with it next time. My FW, 100-0 (as concession wipes points, per the opg) |

Round 2 | | Dan Van Kampen | MW (+18)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
While I don't get to play the fine gentlemen in England face to face too often, other than the Hoskins brothers when they trip over stateside for Continentals/Worlds in Indy (and such), I do keep apprised of the goings on across the pond. Enough in fact, that I'm aware of Niall's deck. Guess what? Looks like (and I may be wrong here, Dan can correct me if I am, but...) DVK chose to try his hand at the very decktype. When dilemmas become moot for an opponent/player, it's stupid. When one player runs a They Will Be Coming deck and the other player is in the DQ, the DQ player should have a better time at not having to sweat the jank that is this kind of battle. (not complete non-interactivity mind you, just a tad bit less stressful/problematic I ask.) [Hence my suggestion that the Revolving Door be able to target a TNG, from my Friday's casual tourney report.] Also, as it's been said before by a number of other players, when one player's turns take 20 seconds each approximately, and the opponent's turns take 3-4 minutes, the game balance is conceivably off. Maybe we need a Ref or ref-like card that limits each player to something like three whole non-mission attempt/scouting attempt actions per turn? Just sayin'. With that off my chest, I did have a pretty good game with Dan, although I must admit I was ready to concede to him about 20 minutes into this match. I'm very glad I didn't, as playing it out did offer me a small victory in the modified win, my 52-34, if memory serves. (due to my point losses from a couple of the Q-Flash cards, i do recall.) |
Matt was playing the deck I almost did. A slow opening hand on Matt's part ment there wasn't much to assimilate for the first few turns. Later I miscalculated and tractor locked his ship at his outpost. I knew it was 'suboptimal', but I took the risk anyway. With an outpost and more ships he was just too slippery and got away before I could grab many folks. |

Round 3 | | Kris Sonsteby | FL (-55)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Party Crasher!!! I WUZ ROBBED! ROBBED, I sez. Not only did Kris borrow a top tier deck from DVK, he piloted it to victory all the while by self-deprecating statements that entered the realm of 'Nelson speak.' Yes, it was a block deck. So, yes, I knew which dilemmas were likely to be faced, over those in the full format. Though, that didn't help much. Considering my deck took a skill drawing dump on me, not to mention my Alphas hiding within said draw deck for the necessary free reports of themselves and then triggering additonal free reports of their hunting pack party members, I was hampered by a number of other factors as well. Oh well, sometimes that's the way it goes. I will admit/acknowledge that I had earned my Genesis Device at Assist Cooperative (in fact, the only time I earned said artifact all day!) and proceeded to drop the terraforming tech on Restore Victims to go for my trick strat of a 2 mission kill (sans space mission completion) after making RV worth 110 points. I knew that In The Zone would kill said strat, but, wanted to see if I could pull it off at least once or twice throughout the day. My good memory as to what dilemmas are in block, helped (or maybe hindered) me plan for "God," Now Would Be a Good Time, Linguistic Legerdemain, amongst others, but, alas, I had forgotten about Q's Vicious Animal Things and that was my undoing. In the clutch play, I sent nearly all of my peeps in play down to RV to bully through {with a Transporter Skill peep aboard my ship) the combo and hit the QVAT wall at the forefront and being way way waaaaaay past 54 strength with the Really Big Gun and the Hirogen monsters, got stopped cold. That allowed Kris's borrowed Klingons to power through my Distracted by Thoughts of Home - The Clown: Bitter Medicine - Subspace Shock Wave - Gomtuu Shock Wave combo. To be accurate, his turn prior to my blunder walk, he'd hit the first three of those, putting two damage tactics (only one of which killed a peep, the other was a non-killer) on his ship, with the two kills from SSW additionally. He hit the GSW on his final turn, and my TC:BM rechosen Honor (over Navigation) did reduce four of his crew by -2 each, but, it wasn't enough to keep him at/under 32 Integrity which then would have had the damage from GSW turn his Bortas into space dust and give me a much needed number of turns/respite to overtake his overall better amount of free reports and numerically superior card draws (as I couldn't seem to find either Chakotay nor Donik to power my Ancestral Vision in the attempt to keep up at equal pace.) He lucked out with 34 and nabbed his third mission for the win. So, all in all, a good, fiercely competitive game, tbh, and I tipped my proverbial hat to the man who went on to win our tourney. GG, Kris. You do owe me a rematch! (and preferably with a deck you build yourself. I'm just sayin'.) My FL, 45-100. |
The Animal was schooling me on Hirogen, but had trouble keeping up with all of my free reports and bonus card draws. After a trio of quick solves, a mad dash for final missions saw Q's Vicious Animal Things hold him up at planet while I two-pip cleared a Gomtuu Shockwave in space to complete the upset. FW 100-45. |

Round 4 | | James Heaney | FW (+100)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Ah, yes, my Minneapolis 1E Nemesis! After the Friday gig, his record against me going into this was 3-0. Would I finally upset the apple cart? and make it 1-3? Why yes, yes I did. (So, I'll take that as a small victory for both myself and James 'RedDwarf' Hoskin for his prediction/being in my corner!) We had a great game here. One for the record books/history books, absolutely! James 'BCSWowbagger' ran head first into my double Denevan/Caretaker's/Artillery nigh-identical killing field combos and it was sweet vengeance indeed! I got to Reactor Overload his OPU mid to late game as until then he only drew one off the processing as to avoid such. I placed a tribQ d/l'ed Access Denied on one of his missions and he returned the favor on my Salvage Operation. That provided me with a much appreciated extra 5 points as one of my mission specs was the underappreciated Narik. So, I netted SO with all three printed skills present, for 40, plus 5 from the Greed mission spec skill on Dr. Farek, and the Narik boosted +5, for a total of 50 points. While the blood-ravaged/soaked AQ dealt with their losses, I proceeded to complete Assist Cooperative for 30+10 from the BLUE Borg text boost, and the Comp from Narik again, for 45. Somewhere along the way I had earned the other 5 points, though I honestly can't recall where. It's stumping me, and that's bothersome. Maybe my memory is starting to fade...? I hope not. I 'awarded' James with style points for his 'outside the game' card, that of the 2E card, I Don't Like to Lose. Classic. So, my record now stands 1-3 against the man. I'm sure we're going to have another knockdown, drag out fight in just under two weeks on my home turf. Certainly shall prove interesting. heh heh. My FW, 100-0. |
I spent the week preceding this tournament taunting Matt "The Animal" Hayes in various forums, particularly after Klarhauser and Sonsteby picked me over him to win the regional. After all, he and I are archrivals, and our extremely entertaining games at the previous two tournaments had done nothing but underline that relationship -- particularly after I pulled Tribbles on him on Friday. I came into Saturday with three wins on him and no losses, and Matt came into Saturday with a particular drive to take me down. There was little question in either of our minds that we would play each other at regionals, and that our game would decide the title.
Well, part of that was true, but, since Kris had managed to ruin his own prediction by steamrolling us both, this match turned out to be for second place, not first. We spent a good portion of our time and energy cheering for Dan Van Kampen, who (we believed) was still in mathematical contention for first place, and was playing against Kris (and his own Block-winning deck) for the final round. (Nothing against Kris! Certainly, better Kris win the regional than my archrival! But since Kris seems not to care all that much for 1E, by his own profession only in it for the achievements, our sympathies were naturally with DVK, a passionate and regular 1E'er from way, way back.)
I lost this game 100-0 (spoilers!), but I don't feel bad about it. I didn't fail my deck, and my deck didn't fail me. We just got unlucky.
To explain: When I put together a deck, I usually include a spreadsheet that calculates the probabilities of certain cards getting drawn by a certain turn. For example, in this deck, William T. Riker had a 74% chance of being drawn by Turn 4, and an 83% chance of showing up by Turn 5 (excluding the salutary effects of Mutation and/or Handshake). I generally make sure that things I really want to happen have an 80% or better chance of happening, and things I really need to happen have a 95% or better chance of happening.
In this game, I did not draw to a single Federation personnel (needed to staff the Enterprise-E) until Turn 4. At the time, I said that this was a 1-in-10,000 chance. When I went home and double-checked, I found a spreadsheet error. The actual probability of this happening, according to Excel's Hypergeometric Distribution function, was only 1-in-1,000 (0.106591%, to be precise). I also got no Handshakes and no Mutations (cumulative probability: 0.018%, or 1-in-5600). This prevented me from staffing the Enterprise for several turns. No deck can be blamed for falling victim to a freak accident of probability, and, given the circumstances, I played what I consider to be an immaculate game of cards.
But Matt (also suffering from some slow draws) played an equally immaculate game of cards, and never gave me a chance to catch up -- and quite frequently tripped up my several attempts at rallying. First, he pointed out that Assign Support Personnel couldn't download Cardies directly to my Enterprise, but only to Terok Nor -- something I'd been doing in every game that day and every test game prior to it, but the gametext was very clearly on his side, and that killed one of my reporting strategies. He wiped out a nine-person away team at Insurrection with Ferengi Infestation / Denevan Neural Parasites / Caretaker's Guests / Artillery Attack, then closed the combo with Dead End, just to add insult to injury. The contingency plan came into play, and I started running pell-mell for Alter Records... but the incredibly bad card draws I'd had earlier were still making their presence felt, as the only card in my hand was Injector Assembly One (which I wasn't yet willing to sacrifice), which left me unable to process ore. I needed to expend card plays and draws getting Emok out of the draw deck. And I still needed to restaff the Enterprise-E. Still, I managed to put it all together pretty well, and made it over to Bajor in surprisingly short order.
...and we encountered almost the exact same combo (Infestation simply became Hanonian Land Eel here), with almost exactly the same Away Team, which was again wiped out. The E-E was left in orbit, unstaffed and unable to dock to pick up Emok. My hand was still not in good shape. Finally, I got hold of a Handshake. I desperately needed to get three other cards in hand so I could use it to get a fresh start... so I did the only viable thing, choosing to draw two cards from Process Ore rather than one, knowing full well that Matt would Reactor Overload me, killing Telle and destroying my draw engine. This gave me what I needed to Handshake, and I got a new Riker to power Federation Flag: Renewed. I spent the remainder of the game trying to staff the ship and draw out the one additional Computer Skill I needed to complete Alter Records. Even taking his time, though (as he did late in the game), Matt was able to build up huge crews, deployed Ocular Implants, thwarted my favorite combos, and won the game.
If I had had one more turn, I would have solved Alter Records, as my Computer Skill arrived in hand, and flipped the outside-the-game card I'd brought to the match in case I needed a late-game rally: I Don't Like To Lose. With two more turns, Characterize Neutrino Emissions would have followed (thanks, City of B'Hala!). With four more turns, I would have won the game. Of course, this assumes Matt would have moved as patiently as he did if I'd been doing better. Surely it would at least have been a closer match.
To be sure, I did make some missteps. For the first time all day, I managed to Access Deny my Ferengi Ingenuity / Dejaren combo by drawing to Q the Ref, which was great... but then Matt attempted, and I learned that I placed Ingenuity and Dejaren down in the wrong order! Plus, he earned Mission Specialist points from it. I managed to catch Matt with a Remat Detonator, but I failed to use it before the game ended. I seeded a Spaceborne Entity stupidly (not that he encountered it). Most annoying to me was, upon realizing that my Dominion War Efforts strategy was not entirely legal, I simply sacrificed Assign Support Personnel for a Turn 1 Martinez, rather than more wisely deploying my support personnel to Terok Nor over several turns for free. But these turned out to make very little difference in the final result -- in particular, most of those support personnel showed up in my opening hand, so downloading them would not have solved my freakish problems drawing blue personnel. In another game, I'd be really beating myself over them. In this case, I simply congratulate Matt on a solid Hirogen build and one of the most truly vicious dilemma combos I've ever come across, with a highly strategic Dead End seeded in exactly the right place to be a setback of the highest order for me. Even with my bad luck at the opening, this game could still have been winnable, but Matt's smart play ensured I never got the chance.
So now we're 3-1, and Kris is regional champion. Stranger things have happened. We'll see what happens in Fargo. |

Closing Thoughts |
All in all, the day was a good one. I had a blast, even with the results as they were. Congrats to Kris on his victory. As the Klingon proverb goes and Khan coopted, 'Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold.' But, I will assuredly take it piping hot, if I can get it delivered as such! hee hee. I look forward to our eventual rematch, sir. Cannot wait. Oh yes. I...can...not...wait. Mwuhahahahahahahahahahahahaha. After a good feast at Sonic, with Justin not feeling well, he retired home to recuperate, so Waso, Ben, and I hit Iron Man 3 up for a viewing and enjoyed it immensely. The invite has been extended to all involved over the past two days, and I hope to see as many of these guys up in Fargo on the 17th/18th for our shindig at Arby's. (1E, Tribbles, and Into Darkness!!!) Any/all who read this, consider the invite extended to you as well, should you brave the spring (?) that is happening in ND at this time. Please do. |
