Introduction |
My plan was to build a deck during the christmas holiday but as it changed from a quiet time by the fire to a adrenaline fueled race through Europe and Africa it was just not in the cards.
All of a sudden it's that time and people are ariving from all over and it's time to sit down to play. I fund my last Uncommons I needed in the basement but managed to drop the box containing some 20 kilos of cards on the floor. So after 5 hours of sorting cards instead of sleeping I namanged to get a deck together. But it was not the deck I intended to bring but something rebuilt. A Hirogen deck with some help from Equinox. Nothing much, just something to seed. Tallaxians and Ocompas had to help out too. I think I managed to get the ratio of draw correct this time so the deck was much better then last time I tried something similar. Ended up printing some of the cards I didn't find and as such some cards apparently stuck in the printer so when I was sorting out the deck before the first game, I noticed that I was missing some cards. Oh well, let's see where this goes. =) |

Round 1 | | Bye | BY (0) |
A bye, again! I got this one yesterday as well. More time for me to find the cards that's missing from my deck list. |

Played agains a TOS deck with the three way treaty. He was juggling around a whole bunch of things and started attempting early. I don't really know what I was doing. Played a lot of Handshake, mutation and the Power. Vomited out Ocompa, Tallaxians, Home away from home crew and Hirogen. Took some early mission points form a space mission. Idrin made a great find during a Salvage Operation. =)
I was scared the whole game that I would not be able to solve enough missions to get all the points I needed as I forgot to include a AQ mission. Carwash aluded to him having You are a monument so I was attempting like crazy when he said that I didn't have to do more as I had 100 points and had won. His mind games with me had had the reverse effect. =P |
Stoffe was playing Hirogen, and had been grumbling all morning, making a big deal about how his deck had been cobbled together at the last minute in the small hours, and he'd probably forgotten to put any ships in, and half the cards he needed hadn't printed for some reason, so please don't expect a competitive match and be lenient when it turns out he forgot to stock any space dilemmas. I wasn't buying this bullshit for a second, and knew to be on my guard. And it was just as well. My first turn downloads and draw engines worked as normal, but I held off from attempting missions until a couple of turns later than in my other games. Stoffe was up to something, I knew it, and I didn't want to run headlong into a trap. He made a good few downloads himself, played a bit of hexany to cycle out cards he needed, and played plenty of "Handshake" for draws. Despite my scepticism, there did seems to be one flaw in his deck: he realised that he had no Alpha Quadrant missions, and expressed his concern at having to make 140 points to satisfy "You Are A Monument". Now, despite what he maintains in his report, I never actually claimed that I had YAAM… but I did nothing to dispel that notion either. Ultimately though it made little difference; my plucky rainbow TOS alliance were no match for Stoffe's dilemmas, and I lost a lot of good people, including some of the ones I needed to get through subsequent dilemmas. Meanwhile, in the Delta Quadrant, he was throwing everything he had at missions as quickly as he could in order to get to the 140 he thought he needed before time was called. In the end he needn't have worried, and made it to 100 with time to spare, while I was stil in the process of limping through my third mission. I subsequently learned that I'd had a narrow escape: his deck was actually designed not to stay in the Delta Quadrant, but to hunt in true HIrogen style, beaming through enemy shields and massacring them on their own ships in melée battle; he'd just had unlucky draws that forced him to attempt missions instead. :/ |

Round 3 | | Johan Skoglund | ML (-18)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Deja Vu! I've done this game before. Both me and Scox is sitting with similar decks on each side of the table for the win of the tournament. He won the last time around due to me not being able to draw any cards and as I this time was ready and had a deck that could draw cards. Unfortunately I managed to more or less clear out 3 missions but due to a unfortunate Denevian Parasites I lost all my Medicals I had left. Only managed to solve one mission, one was locked out by a dead end and the other two I didn't have the skills left to do. Then time was called and Scox took the win once again from me with his Dominion deck agains my Hirogen. I was so stressed out after this I couldn't even collect my cards for a while. |
Winner takes it all. Another triple space line with Delta and Hirogen/Equinox from Smiley's side. Tons of people pouring out on his side and drawing a lot of cards. I was drawing well too, but a well timed disruptor overload hampered my start a bit, but despite not designing too much redundancies into the deck I could plow through dilemmas quite well. Some poor planning and foresight meant a LOT of the higher the fewer "points" on my side, so three missions would have been necessary from my side. Again I have to thank my dilemmas this time since Smiley had tons of people which he as always managed well in multiple waves of attempts, but despite attempting 4 different missions he only manages to clear and score one of the missions within the time, while I managed two, almost three. Some minor battle occurred by a surprise visit by Hirogens around the wormhole at some point, but no real affect, except maybe delaying his mission solving in the end. I was also thinking about reversing the hunt to compensate for the negative bonus points, but ended up judging it would take too much resources and effort to re-focus my efforts to do both, especially since the battle side of the deck had been toned down this time. Close game anyway, could have gone either way with just minor different choices from either side. |

Closing Thoughts |
As always, a great time was had, with fantastic people and fun decks. I would like to thank the hotel to hosting us and would like to recommend their rooms and menu as we where treated to food and dricks between rounds but the fantastic staff.
I think I'll retire this deck now and try to build something new and more fun. Hirogen has had it's fun. I wish I would have had time to play against Jörn or Torbjörn as their decks looked to be interesting. Borg is always nerve racking to play against and Torbjörns Mirror deck would have been nice to see in action. |
